exspheres

Crystalline stones had begun to develop within the rocks that formed the Network. They were small, and it appeared that many were blue if one were to take notice of that limited number of little clusters which had developed on the surface. There was something quite strange about these stones, however: though they were embedded firmly into the rock, they were all distinctly spherical in shape and glittered in an odd fashion. They were undeniably more than just gems...

These were exspheres. Tiny little crystals which fed on life energy like tiny, gemlike leeches. The Universe, rippling with energy as it always did, simply figured that this was how to convert life energy into something usable. It hadn't quite figured out the details yet, though.
