Does thinking that Israel is the "bad guy" in this mess make me anti-Semitic? And if so, can someone explain to me why that is ( Read more... )

If it does, then I'm in line right with ya.

As for the 'Disagreeing with Israel makes you anti-Semitic' theory, I don't get it either.

If you come across any good explanations, though, I'm all ears!

At least I'm not the only one who's confused.

Calling someone anti-Semitic (or anti-whomever) is generally a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that you don't agree with them. It's a way to shame you into changing your opinion.

Do you hate Jewish people or otherwise think that all Jewish people are bad/lazy/greedy/other-nasty-trait-here? Do you think the world would be better off if all Jews were killed or somehow controlled? Then you're not anti-Semitic.

This is the international politics version of being called racist if you object to the specific actions of one person of a different ethnicity than you. Or, as recently happened to jonah777, being called racist because he objects to job "insourcing" in the construction industry (which affects us directly...)

That makes more sense than any other explanation I've heard. I mean obviously, I would know better than anyone else if I were anti-Semitic, based pretty much on the traits you describe here. But it is still hurtful to be accused of something so vile, even when you know it isn't true. I just wondered if there was something I was missing about the whole thing.

And yikes! for jonah777. That just sucks all the way around.

I knew you were anti-me. I'm so glad we aren't friends anymore.

Why would your feelings toward a country's actions make you feel anti-Semitic? It's Israel, not the Jews, that are doing this.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. It's just an attitude that I've been seeing a lot of lately, and which I genuinely don't get. Like i told my husband, I couldn't care less if the people of Israel are purple and green martians who worship at the altar of seaweed, I would still disagree with the things their government is doing in Lebanon right now.

There's a petition within the Jewish community to tell Israel that they won't solve their problems by bombing the Lebanese. While I personally won't sign it (in regards to my own feelings and thoughts on the matter), it's a sign that not all Jews agree with what goes on in Israel. In fact, not all Jews supported the emergence of the State of Israel.

It's a very troubling situation for everyone.

Who cares who's doing what - it's a sign of the end times and fundamental xtians are liquidating. I say we hit some garage sales and buy some rapture ready propperty!!!

In all seriousness, I'm with you on my feelings with Isreal, as I think most people are. I just hope we're too busy to get involved in this mess...
