He turned the silver bangle over in his hand, watching it as it glistened under the harsh light of the table lamp. He glanced at the owner, a woman in her late 30s or early 40s with red hair he longed to run his fingers through.
“This is an expensive piece of jewellery.”
“How much would I get for it?”
He could see it hurt her to ask the question, something about this bracelet meant a lot to her; there was a sentimental attachment here.
“You don’t want to sell this. Surely you can’t be that desperate for money to pawn such a beautiful bracelet?”
“Look Mr.....”
“Adama.”
“Mr. Adama, my mother is sick, she has cancer and I can’t afford to pay for her care on my teacher’s salary so please, for the love of the Gods, just tell me how much it’s worth.”
He wrote the figure on a piece of paper and watched as her eyes widened in shock before misting with unshed tears. She nodded her head and nervously fidgeted as he counted the money onto the counter in front of her.
Once the last cubits were counted she swiped them up and shoved them deep into her pocket. Tear filled green eyes met impossibly blues ones.
“Please, sell it to someone.....worthy of it. Please?”
He gazed at her, there was something about her that fascinated him. He wanted to know more about this woman who clearly had spent too much time in her life being sad. He grasped her arm, pulling her towards him and slid the bracelet onto her wrist.
“Something tells me I’d find it difficult to find someone more worthy of it than you.”
He relished in the small smile she gave him before she turned and fled from his pawn shop.
