Recap - 4x07 Guess What's Coming to Dinner?

Aug 05, 2010 14:50

(If it means anything in exchange for my tardiness and utter failure at concision, this took me a lot longer chunk of time than I was planning on. meep.)
Previously on BSG: TPTB finally gave up trying to claim that the Cylons had a Plan; Kara was crazy; Leoben was creepy; Gaeta got shot; and the Hybrid told Kara more about her Special Destiny.

I'll admit that I didn't notice the music (beyond the song) the first time I saw this. But after listening to the CD and reading Bear's blog...GUH.

Bear's blog entries almost make me wish I hadn't been so indifferent about theory when I was studying piano.

I'm wondering why Kara isn't creeped out by Roslin having a picture of the mandala behind her bed in sickbay.

HOLY SHITBALLS I never noticed that before. 1!11!!!11!!!11

Wow. Nice catch. (Tho I have a feeling it wasn't intentional, but LULZ regardless.)

OMG MANDALA.

Why isn't there any followup about who shot Gaeta?
I assume because it's too complicated to think about who to punish in that situation? Gaeta and the others were pulling a mutiny on Kara at the time, and I think everyone could've reasonably defended how they reacted. So Adama did what he does most of the time ~his kids~ are involved but not betraying him personally: sweep the whole thing under the rug and wait to be distracted by something else. :p

Okay, Sam's not quite one of his kids, but he's an in-law at least. :) And I can't imagine he would've gotten more than the couple-weeks-in-the-brig Cally or Sharon got for killing people.

Speaking of which AAAAAAH NATALIE. Still in shock over that, honestly. I saw it coming as the scene went on, but I still couldn't believe it until it happened.

AJ and Bear own me forever. I think I'll listen to it right now.

*sigh* Yeah, I think this is the most likely explanation. (what really grates my cheese is that in the previous episode, Adama worries about Gaeta by name among a list of "kids" on the Demetrius.)

NATALIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

I have a really hard time watching this episode, to be honest, because I didn't expect Natalie to get shot at all, and I especially didn't expect her to die, so it slayed me.

Bear's music always owns me, but that song? Oh lord.

Is Roslin's (and Adama's) totalitarianism justified by the situation humanity finds itself in after the destruction of the colonies?

Baby dictators all seem to start with 'the situation' calls for swift, decisive action. It always ends in blood. The ends do not justify the means. I'd started having problems with Adama back in Season 3 during Dirty Hands. This episode made me very uncomfortable with Roslin and Adama's lack of democratic instincts.

Why isn't there any followup about who shot Gaeta?

Because logical rational decision making was no longer part of the plot. They were going with the God will fix everything at the end and the special angels must be followed even if they're totally out of their minds. (Yes, I was a proud member of Team Mutiny and was cheering for Gaeta and Zarek through most of Oath and Blood on the Scales).

Did you expect Athena to shoot Natalie after she'd gotten her daughter?Uh, yes, see comment above re: total lack of logical, rational decision-making. Shooting Natalie after she got Hera back was ( ... )

I felt like Roslin and Adama were having fascist leanings much earlier, but I can't really pinpoint where. It works if BSG is a post-9/11 commentary (which it sort of is). But it doesn't make me like what I see any better.

I wish this were funny 'cuz it's true. It's just true.

I'd suggest Lay Down Your Burdens when Roslin tried to steal the election and Adama helped her cover it up. It also has the promotion of Adama's son's girlfriend from Petty Officer to XO over trained officers in a clear bit of nepotism. It sort of deteriorates from there and by Dirty Hands I was really disliking what I saw.
