I’m a father, Felix Gaeta thought to himself as his child and the child’s mother slept under the guard of Centurion and Two. And of Kara Thrace, though she was more guarding everyone against the aforementioned Two.

Doc Cottle didn’t even need to perform the DNA test - Felix knew the infant was the product of his loins. I made it, he thought, the thought borne with a different feel, a different flavor than the same words had in the wake of New Caprica and the hardships since then.

In his mind and his gut, pride formed a triune emotion with shock and fear. Three parts equally composing one state of being.

*

Felix knew what she had been a part of on New Caprica. Given his position, it would have been bizarre to not know. He knew well the list of crimes this Eight could be charged with. So much. So many…

And yet.

*

Gaeta slept. Sleeping wasn’t so much the problem for him…for him, the problem was the voices of his ancestor who spoke to him in the dreamless darkness…

It is right that you are not surprised at how you are received. Quite understandable why you are trusted less by your fellow men. For not only are you spending time with the occupying Cylons, not only is it done so willingly; you are sleeping with one of the enemy, with a Cylon. You have even created a child with her. You have begat a new generation of the race who seeks the extinction of humanity.

Felix knew that he could no longer assure questioners - those Colonists in the Fleet who doubted Gaeta’s loyalty - that he was merely playing a role, tricking the Cylons into believing Felix was their creature as much as Baltar once was.

And while it was not as difficult to believe now as it once had been, Gaeta knew nobody would care how she - the Eight - was received by her fellow Cylons. Once, all Cylons had been united in a common cause, a single community, a voice without dissonance. Now there was dispute within and between the numbers - Kara had whispered that to him once, and glimpses of it had been visible during the Occupation. These days, Cylons fought and argued with other Cylons.

And she was the second Eight to become pregnant by a human. The second Cylon to be a pregnant woman. Felix considered asking the other father for suggestions, advice, for something to help guide him…but Felix had a feeling that this newfound kinship, commonality, was not sufficient to overcome everything else between them.

*

As he woke, Felix knew that his muscle memory was not the only part of him that missed the feel of that Eight, longed for the scent of her hair and her skin, ached for the sound of her voice in his ear. Despite everything he knew, that was true.

And, accepting its existence, he wondered what his - their - child felt like, smelled like, sounded like.
