I got it today... it's pretty nice. So far the only annoyance is Vista ( Read more... )

While I have no BSD point of reference, I *love* my Jaunty desktop install. I've been dual booting with XP since 2005 and running Ubuntu full-time since 2007 and the going just gets smoother and smoother. I can run Rosetta Stone and World of Warcraft under WINE and a dual-monitor nVidia setup with minimal issues. My only quibble with the latest iteration is the flaky connection to my admittedly nonstandard bluetooth keyboard made by (wait for it)...Microsoft. :)

I started using a Linux desktop at TAMS, since that was what Heise insisted on using and I didn't have my own computer. I started using OpenBSD a couple of years later, and sometimes it was my desktop (alongside Linux, OS/2, BeOS, and OpenStep - when I felt the need to try every operating system under the Sun).

After that, I spent about 6 years using some kind of Unix (mostly Irix, actually) as my desktop at work, and a good chunk of that time with OS X at home. I am... comfortable with Unix. :-)

"Un-install this program using an unsigned executable from some company we can't verify called "Microsoft Corporation"? Are you sure?"

HAHAHAHAHAAA.

I've been running Fedora 10 on my T60p with decent success. The wireless, however, is hit and miss. I'm told from coworkers that many of the wireless issues are resolved in Fedora 11 but I'm not really holding my breath. Other coworkers can't get enough of their Ubuntu systems so if I'd say give that a shot over Fedora if you're not already predisposed to the Redhat configuration mentality :)

I think I mentioned this when you were asking on your LJ about what desktop Linux to use... Fedora works OK, but I definitely prefer Debian-derived systems over Red Hat-derived.

My work laptop is a Thinkpad (T60) running ubuntu. 9.04 introduced dual-screen out of the box (previously available with XrandR and its magnificent. I would be one miserable employee if I were forced to run Windows, though I do plan to install either Vista or 7 in a VM in an attempt to stay current enough to use them. The first time I attempted to troublshoot a network issue on Vista it took me several unflattering minutes to bring up the command prompt. Even my new Air Card was a non-issue in 9.04. No more /dev/modem devices and awkward vendor strings.
