I need to break here to say that I've been trying to think of a tattoo to memorialize my dad for six years now, and tonight I was talking to friends about it YET AGAIN, trying to figure out what it should be because nothing seemed right. I was writing this, I got up to refill my ginger ale (I've been having a Margo Pike few days, so queasy) and it slapped me upside the head: THOSE LITTLE MUSEUM BUTTONS. If I can hunt one down (or an image of one), that'll be it. That's...kind of my entire childhood and the thing that was most special to my dad and me. I'm sorry I keep hijacking this snark with my childhood BS and I don't blame people if you've skipped it. But I'm so happy right now.
oh honey. this sounds absolutely lovely. :) when you get it done, will you post a pic?
this book pissed me the fuck off - they are ALL being so catty and terrible and impractical and unrealistic. so your snarks have been on point and i look forward to the next/final!
Leslie stepped inside. “Remember my wheat allergy,” she said. “And not too much running, and I hate dogs.” Us baby-sitters refrained from rolling our eyes.--And I roll my eyes at the girls. Leslie obviously must know these girls force kids to do things and they throw a temper tantrum if they don't get their way
( ... )
They ought to use her as a good example, because her parents probably coached her to remember the "not to do" list to avoid asphyxiation by wheat or a heart attack induced dog sighting. With little kids (especially very young ones) it's always a good idea to remind them that they can't eat this, shouldn't do that, etc for their own health and safety. Not all kids are born robust and healthy completely devoid is physical problems that might prevent them from doing what other kids do. Why on earth the sitters would side with the kids that act like bullies towards her is just another example of Sbrook sitting skillz.
YES!!! Agree on all counts. This pisses me off that the baby sitters get annoyed by this.
Also, whenever I read "planetarium" I read it as "planeh-ARium" because of that dude on South Park.
I love how you annotated the AMNH and Central Park trip with your memories! I love, love seeing anything having to do with NYC history. I haven't been to the museum in probably ten years now, since I moved away from the NYC area, and I'm sure it must be completely different from even then.
I think your museum button tattoo idea is awesome. What a great way to honor your dad!
All of the BSCers are off-the-charts annoying in this book, but I think Dawn takes the cake. It's so out of character for her to be paranoid, and she makes it seem like NYC is just one long SVU episode.
Now I'm picturing her locked in the McGills' apartment during SS#6 and coming across an SVU marathon. It's so weird, though - I know she says Palo City is a suburb of Anaheim, but she's SPENT TIME in cities at least.
I've only been there once since my dad died and we hadn't gone very often since they began "updating" it. It's changed a lot, and it's sad to think of the exhibits that are now gone to make space for another cafe or gift shop. (Was the Hall of Biodiversity there when you were there last? Is it me or is that just a room where they shove all the shit they had to take out of the other rooms over time?)
Yes, because what the museum needs is more gift shops or cafes. Not like NYC has any restaurants or hundreds of tourist trap stores. Gotta maximize those dollars!
I'm almost positive the Hall of Biodiversity was there when I was last at the museum. I looked it up online and I definitely remember the dodo bird. It really does seem like a catch all room for the leftovers they didn't know what to do with.
