You know, sometimes social workers are this incompetent and cops are this unethical, and sometimes people sort of fall through the cracks, especially poor kids. So I would love to read a highly sensitively written novel about three children who live in the mall because it's actually their only choice.

This is not that novel.

Excellent snark! You had me LOLing right and left! And yeah, this is one of the stupidest books I've ever read. Though to answer your question mark, yes, it's common for the store room in a mall store to lead into the back of the mall. It's easier to take shipments in the back than in the front. I was amazed when I worked at the mall to find there's a huge corridor down the back and each store has access to it, then it leads outside to the dumpsters and recieving docks.
