Well, I made it through this irritating swill. It gets a bit sloppy at the end because I was very, very tired of Mal's stupidity. But on the upside I found the greatest song in all Christendom. I hated gym in school and I still shudder at the thought of jogging now, but DAMN Mallory! You acted like a total hosebeast because of EIGHT volleyball sessions? REALLY? That's just...you weren't being forced to play day and night, you played a couple hours a week. And if you don't like gym is doing one thing you hate really worse than doing another thing you hate? I mean, I suck at basketball, but I also sucked at track. I didn't have a pathological hatred of either. I just sucked it the fuck up and did the bare minimum to get the teacher to give me a B. It wasn't worth detention or dragging down my GPA or being a total jerk over

I actually related so much to this book that for a while I had it confused as my own memories, lol

And it annoys me way more than it should that Mal’s mother looks annoyed that her oldest daughter has plans, like she has no right to ever do anything but help with the kids. Do your own parenting, Mrs. Pike!

And let’s not forget the stupidest part of the archery plotline, which is that Mal is way too weak to actually hold up the bow, and instead of making her strengthen her arms as would be appropriate in gym class, they gave her a slim green plastic bow (just her) and of course she excels. I have no idea whether she was allowed to keep using the toy bow while on the archery team, but it wouldn’t make much sense to have a bunch of kids doing it right and then this one weakling goofing around with a kiddie version.
