SS 13 Aloha, Baby-sitters! Part 1

Jul 15, 2014 16:57

I was bored the other day and did a quick skim of Me and Katie (the Pest) to see if it was snark-worthy.  And. . .it’s actually not bad!  Not groundbreaking children’s literature in any way, but the sibling relationship, the friendship dynamics, and the general emotions all felt reasonably plausible and healthy, and the adults were generally kind ( Read more... )

claudia, jessi wangst, editors are overrated, ann hates mal, passive aggressive, ss#13: aloha baby-sitters, sms field trip fetish, mal must suffer, shut up dawn, lerangis, scenery porn, stoneybrook lacks empathy, cult of bsc, stoneybrook lacks common sense, rampant lesbianism, shut up jessi

I am sooo far behind on my Sarah Vowell books. I sorta want to go to Hawaii but at the same time I know it's kinda a shitty place to go because of the colonisation. And I love that the whole reason for their trip diary is because Mal can't go. Because of course she can't! Mal can;t have nice things ( ... )

How can anyone not love Jenny? Seriously I am such a Jenny P fangirl its not even funny. I have fanfic ideas about her and Jamie (that I started at one point but never finished) and a million other Jenny feels. They may call her a brat, but I think she's a decently well-mannered and realistic four year old.

At least she says please and thank you, even if she does tantrum from time to time. Like four year olds do.

Random, but every time (and there must be a hundred times) the BSC wrote something starting with "we, the undersigned," in my head as a child I always read it as "We, the undesired," and wondered what they were talking about.

God, that stupid-ass episode of Full House.... That Brady Bunch Hawaii arc was major both for the show (it wasn't common in those days to do an on-location shoot, plus stuff that happened behind the scenes...)

Admittedly, I always feel super awkward tipping bellhops, or really anything when I can’t just casually add to the total or leave it on the table. For me, this depends. If I request help, sure. But if I don't request it and the bellhop takes my shit and does it and I know he's not going to give it back until I'm at my room, then no. If you give me an optional service I don't want, screw you. I used to work in a hotel. Bellhops get paid decently, and tip are icing on the cake. Their jobs aren't considered to be tipped positions. Neither are housekeepers. Housekeepers got 1.5x regular minimum wage, and bellhops for 2x ( ... )

Chapter 5 stuff

I like this chapter. For once the parents are admitting needing help because they're doing something wrong, and for once it's not a perfect or cutesy job, and the sitter knows on some level things aren't going very well.

And I’m not exactly sure why this would make her particularly excited and "curious" to see Pearl Harbor, in the sense that she seems to think of this outing as fun. Immaturity and enough removal from what happened ( ... )
