Mallory Pike, #1 Fan Part 2

Aug 27, 2013 23:26

Sorry for my lengthy absence!  I was enjoying a visit from my brother, middle school brat turned “lawyer for all the lands,” as our local paper memorably phrased it, and my adorable niece, who is, as she herself will tell you, too. . .”funny and cute.”  And while I won’t claim she’s some kind of Gabbie Perkins, she does do some very funny riffs on ( Read more... )

Hmm, by Mal's logic Stephanie Myers met a vampire family that sparkles, JK Rowling attended a magical school called Hogwarts and Narnia, Oz and Wonderland exist huzzah!

Seriously, nearly all books say this is a book based on fiction unless it's stated otherwise I knew that at seven when I started reading chapter books, Mal's an idiot

But StephEnie (named after her dad who was "clever" and spelled it with an E) DID meet a sparkly vampire! It was in a wet dream. Meeting once upon a dream still counts, right? Especially when the author basically fanfics her own dream about a sparkling teenager that she has admitted she's leave her husband for?

In fact, I am pulling off a BSC-style move at the end of the month in which my brother will fly me to Amsterdam to be a substitute nanny for two weeks.
If your account does not include Mallory Pike blow-up dolls or Alan Gray mailing himself to Amsterdam in a dog carrier, I will be sad.

OMG THE TYPEWRITER LOLCAT! LOVE IT.

Re ebooks: I have a Kobo, which is more like the size of a BSC book (and about half the thickness) and a lot lighter than the iPad so it's a lot more comfortable to read with. Plus, my library in NZ mostly had those huge, heavy hardbacks that were a pain to carry around at the best of times, let alone when I was nearly finished one book and didn't want to switch to the next book and then switch back to the original book when I got home. Between that and abandoning books around the world to keep from getting dinged for excess baggage while I was travelling, I was SO ready for an ereader.

I don't think Mal was out of line criticizing her mother's (and father's, since he could wrap his package) reproductive choices. When the responsibility for the outcome of those choices falls onto someone else who has no say, that other person has become involved. Mal has been made responsible for far too much regarding her younger siblings. When a triplet knocks over milk, SHE is the one ordered to clean it up. It's beyond the occasional helping. She has really been expected to step up like a third parent. When her mother's choices mean Mal's choices about parenting are revoked, Mal has every right to be critical ( ... )

Especially her mention of having Mal make phone calls for her.

I think the extent of me letting an 11 year old making ANY call for me would be to call for food delivery - and I'd write down my order, so I don't end up with sweet and sour chicken instead of curry chicken because the kid thinks it's 'nasty.'

Did people, especially kids, still say “word processor” in the early-90s?

+raises hand+ Only in the extent of the class I took freshman year of high school - and only for about the first few weeks. Does 14 count as a kid? I know I currently call anyone under 21 a kid.

J. M. Barrie is not considered one of the world’s great writers.

Two words for you Mal: BULL SHIT

She'd probably say that about Harper Lee too just because she only wrote one book.

Mal, just get an FFN account, learn what slash fic is and leave the real world alone.

This is relevant to kids dealing in business, though it may not be apparent at first ( ... )

not everyone gets a great childhood. Why is that a big deal?

The mary sue play is the best part of the book.
