Karen's Campout (1-6)

HOLY SHIT, NO TWO-TWO CHAPTER! When I got this book, I was very disappointed to see that they switched characters (Karen, Nancy, Hannie, Linny, and David Michael) throughout the chapters. I was considering skipping all the non-Karen chapters in order to not get thrown off, but then realized that would only throw me off more (and ruin any ( Read more... )

Loving this so far! I think you're becoming one of my favourite snarkers here; but I love everyone equally. *laughs*

CAMPERS ASSEMBLE

I totally heard this in Thor's voice, shouting "Avengers, Assemble!" and then I thought of my friend who cosplayed as Thor (and his friends dressed up as the other Avengers) last year at Anime North. He's currently cosplaying as Batman these days, though, to the point where he and his friend (as Robin) are having a fundraiser for Easter Seals by rappelling down the CN Tower in their costumes.

THEY ARE ALLOWED TO DO THINGS BY THEMSELVES SOMETIMES. Best friends are fine but they don't need to be the ONLY people in your life! This! I remember having best friends when I was a kid; not so much anymore, but I don't remember doing absolutely everything with them. Even now, as an adult, I don't have just ONE best friend, or even a group that I exclusively hang out with. This is because many of my friends have different interests, and it's not fair to make one friend do something that they have NO ( ... )

, and the adults in her Big House and Little House families just cannot control their fucking selves and have to shoot eachother dirty looks while they wait at the camp bus stop with Karen. I hate these people.

Why does everyone need to send her off? I'd imagine it'd be strictly LH family because we all know that no one in the BH really gives a damn about her.

I don't remember reading this one, but according to Super Special #2, it is indeed a full uniform.

Although the camps I went to never did that, I think they call it "bug juice" because it attracts bugs...or at least, that's what I read in one of my classmates' short stories in a creative writing class I took once.

When these books were new, the whole Goosebumps/gummy bugs/etc. thing was in full swing. It was like Halloween food names all year round.

check out the cover of SS#2 for the uniforms. They're...utterly ridiculous, to say the least. Supposedly there's also camp UNDERWEAR and I don't want to know how they enforce that rule.

I love that Hannie isn't even trying to pretend she's sad to not be in Karen's cabin. But IIRC Nancy turns into a total pain in the ass clingy baby in this one, which Karen would have thrived on...maybe Karen and Hannie should've traded bunks. Then Hannie could've actually had some fun this summer. I love that this is a continuous personality trait for Hannie, too - when they went to pony camp Hannie blew off the other 3Ms to practice riding all the time (except I call BS on that because no camp is going to let little kids take horses out whenever the fuck they want, unsupervised no less).

The stuffed puppy idea is really cute! But I don't know if Sari would've really gotten it, being two. But I'm not clear on if Sari is an Emily Michelle two or a Gabbie Perkins two. So maybe she would have.

Karen isn't wearing a uniform on the cover o.O

And why would the girls be packing all those clothes if they were just gonna wear uniforms anyway?

I really don't get camps that require uniforms. The thought of being in a uniform all week, every day of the week, every moment of the day is one that squicks me out in tremendous ways. I've never been to sleepaway camp though--just various day camps, and they gave you optional camp t-shirts but none of them eeeever required a uniform.

The point is supposed to be to make everyone feel like a great big team instead of focusing on clothing choice and feeling like individuals. The literal point of a uniform is to create unity, oneness, everyone the same. It makes sense sometimes, like in sports where teams can not have members operating individually.

But for a sleep-away camp, it means either a new uniform for each day, which would get expensive for things that won't be worn again, or re-wearing sweaty clothes. I like what some schools do, which is pick a color pallet and items, like red and blue, and skirts, slacks, or shorts, and blouses or polos that can also be white, and let the kids pick clothes in those colors and items. Then parents can shop second-hand for things that their kids will outgrow, versus specialty uniforms that can't be bought at Goodwill and so must be bought new and for a premium over regular new clothing.
