Hello internet! My life lately has consisted significantly of a) work and b) worrying about work, so I have not been the best online citizen, for which I apologize. But ( work freakout )
I had a hard time with comparing these guys to the Kenneth Branagh version, too. But Amy Acker was awesome, and I thought Alexis Denisof did well, especially as it went on. I loved the "even if she were an Ethiope" bit, because it underlined how not-ok racism is in a funny way -- but also highlighted how problematic Claudio is. He's played as young and mostly charming and just kinda gullible, but it's still kind of puzzling as to why Hero might like him or um, Clark Gregg want him in the family at all after all that.
Anyway - mostly, I came in to say, SQUEEE, Joss Whedon's Much Ado! Glad you liked it, too! :D
I TOTALLY kept hearing the Branagh version in my head. But I still totally enjoyed this version on its own merits, and I didn't compare TOO much. :) But yeah. Claudio is REALLY problematic, and I think that it helps to play him as young and naive, but I still feel like I want MUCH more at the end, in terms of lesson-learning. Shakespeare doesn't let people get away with that sort of thing very often (I'm comparing this to Love's Labour's Lost, which is a somewhat similar story--multiple sets of bantering lovers--but the thoughtless ones are sent to work in a hospital to gain some empathy before they can win the hearts of the ladies. Which is ALSO a weird ending to a comedy, but I would think that Claudio could have benefited from that sort of treatment.)
RIGHT? I mean, I loved Simon, but I had never had those particular feelings towards Sean Maher before, so he was a revelation. And Amy Acker, seriously, what does she have to do to start getting lead roles in mainstream projects? She's amazing.
I love all your Elementary thoughts! I've enjoyed the BBC Sherlock, but I so much prefer this interpretation of the character, where he can be thoughtless but is rarely cruel. I like that a big part of the reason he's a detective is that he wants to help people, as opposed to being in it solely to show off how smart he is or solve puzzles.
And JOAN. One of my favorite things about the first season was seeing her discover her affinity for detective work and finding a new purpose in her life.
I am finding myself feeling this way about fictional partners more and more these days, actually--Holmes and Watson, Clint and Natasha, even Jules and Lassiter on Psych--where I certainly wouldn’t MIND if they made out, but mostly I’m just really invested in their
( ... )
I have always had a thing for Sean Maher, but I have never seen him be, like, ACTIVELY sexy before, and DAMN. YES PLEASE. (Of course given that he's gay, it would have been fun, under other circumstances, for them to have left Conrad a man, but then you'd have the gay villains, which is obviously no good. But in a different circumstance, it would have been awesome!) I never watched Dollhouse so I don't know what she got to do there, but I have felt since Illyria that Amy Acker is capable of doing much more than what she frequently gets to do, so I was thrilled to see her in a role like this. I hope it leads to more exposure for her, since this movie has been such a film festival darling.

Yes yes yes. EXACTLY. He likes the puzzles, but he still sees them as people, too. That's really important for me!
Dollhouse is flawed, but Amy Acker is ridiculously good in it. In a way, it's similar to what she did when she went from playing Fred to playing Illyria, in that she gets the opportunity to be several wildly different characters.
both Shawn and Lassiter would be a LOT for one person to deal with
Hee, that's why shipping them with each other is so convenient!
I also have very mixed feelings about Shawn, depending on who's writing him, but that's another issue
I have very conflicted feelings about Shawn myself (I love him except for when I really, really don't!), and my feelings about Shawn/Juliet aren't conflicted so much as they're almost completely negative. So. I think that's why in theory, Jules/Lassiter appeals to me.
My Shawn/Juliet feelings are mostly James Roday/Maggie Lawson feelings (because while I have issues with Shawn, I think James Roday is awesome, at least as a writer and also as an actor, when he gets the chance), so that helps, but yeah. I don't have a lot of energy around them, for sure. I just like when Shawn has CONSEQUENCES to his actions, and when he has moments of generosity and sensitivity, which happened fairly often in seasons 2 and 3 and has kind of dropped off since. As a friend said to me once, "It's kind of hard to love Shawn and also love everybody else," and that's basically how I feel. Hee. I mean, he totally has his moments, and again, my affection for Roday helps me deal with him, but. I love the other three so wholeheartedly that there is a definite contrast!
EVERYTHING ON ELEMENTARY IS SO BEAUTIFUL. It has just filled me with so much glee! I was liking-but-not-loving it until about 1x12, and then that was it, I was GONE. Gah. SO GOOD.
the weird 13 year old in love with KB instead of Keanu Reeves amongst my friend circle, my heart still weeps he and Emma are no longer
Awwwwww. MY HEART WEEPS TOO. I was mostly about Robert Sean Leonard in that movie (Dead Poets Society made a HUGE impact on me as a teenager), but I had a serious thing for Kenneth Branagh, too, and I was so disappointed by how things turned out with him and Emma. Booooooooo.
I highly recommend Elementary! Obviously! Hee. JLM and Lucy Liu are both FANTASTIC in it.
And I do not know how I missed Newsies! I looooooved Swing Kids (that was where I first fell in love with Christian Bale), which came out not long afterward, and I certainly loved musicals, so. *hands* IDEK. I am certainly intrigued by the cast of Zoe, Duncan, Jack, and Jane! I'll keep it in mind. :)
And OMG THAT VIDEO IS HILARIOUS. AMAZING. *laughs and laughs*
Part of why I was so excited to see this was the conviction that Amy Acker was capable of much more than she ever got to do as Fred, and her performance really bore that out for me. I hope you enjoy it, if you see it!
And yes. Having to be inside working during the summer ALWAYS feels a little unjust (especially when you have a climate like yours and mine, where summer is so glorious), but being stressed and overwhelmed on top of it is even worse. I'm sorry you're experiencing the same thing!
I am VERY excited to start in on the ACD books. I read the first few pages of the first one and I am delighted so far. I'll keep you updated! <3
