I totally agree. It's good to know that the world will keep getting a bit better as new generations grow older and are born. It's good to have that to cling to.

My grandmother has never been terribly partisan, though she's leaned more Republican than Democrat throughout her life. She hated FDR, liked Ike, thought JFK was overrated, hated Nixon even more than FDR, still says "bless his heart" about Jimmy Carter in a way that is half-sincere and half-patronizing, and I think had generally reached a point of cynicism where she thought all politicians were full of crap. Four years ago, my sisters and I were visiting her during the campaign, and Kerry was making a stop in Albuquerque. We wanted to go--he was never coming anywhere near Toronto or Kentucky--but didn't because it was evident that my grandmother didn't really approve.

Fast-forward to last week. Your dad sounds very similar to my dad, though I think my dad may have been a little more socially liberal. Still, if he were alive, I have my suspicions that he just couldn't be moved to vote for a Democratic candidate. This is a man who would research party affiliations of the individuals running for judge.

On the flip side, my mother, also a life long Republican, called me after she returned from city hall where she cast an early vote for Obama. She had to announce that for the first time in her life she voted for a Democrat for president and it felt good. :)

I know Obama appeals to our generation and the younger generation which, like you, makes me optimistic about the future of our country. But it's also heartening to see so many older people voting for Obama. According to one headline I saw, a 106 year old nun is voting for him! =)
