I’ve seen a few critics recommending minimal knowledge of
Cloverfield going into the movie, and I think that’s right. It’s also a sign that it’s a gimmick movie. That’s not a pejorative, since there’s nothing wrong with gimmick movies, but you always have to ask: does the gimmick contribute to the story?

I read an article recently about Godzilla that was totally unrelated to Cloverfield and it was talking about how a big part of the original inspiration for Godzilla was the fear of the atomic bomb and atomic power. I appreciate Cloverfield for similarly taking the 9/11 fears and similarly using that as a tool for dramatic effect, but doing so in a way that isn't just Batman going after Al Qaeda or something. (Seriously, what the hell was Frank Miller thinking?)
