I got home late (for me) yesterday, after a long day of interviewing (always draining). And when I arrived, I discovered there was a power cut. It lasted untill 11pm ( Read more... )

It is frustrating to realise how much we rely on electricity. I remember the power cuts in the 70s and my Dad rigged up car batteries to run lights - I bet you couldn’t do that now LOL!!

Did it affect the whole road?

I very vaguely remember power cuts, but not it being this dark. I suppose we knew they were coming and had torches. Or maybe I just didn't feel it so much. We actually get quite a few power cuts where I am (not far from a substation), but it's usually 15 minutes or so - I think my expectations were wonky!

Yes, it was my whole postcode. I did think about going somewhere else, or even over to my folks when it was clearly not a short cut. But being that tired, pjs and dozing did seem rather attractive. I'm just annoyed I'm so tired today after all that rest. Not the answer, apparently.

With automatic resets on the substations, we are no longer accustomed to long power cuts, are we? We had one a few months ago that lasted 5 hours and it was really disconcerting how much it threw me out of any recognisable routine *shakes head* Early bed is really the only practical response.

Yes exactly. The odd little break is completely normal here, but any length of time - even the inital prediction it would be an hour or more was quite startling. And a whole dark evening... whoa.

We've had a couple ice storms here that have kept us without power for more than a day when the temperatures were below freezing. It's just a good thing we have a gas fire in the upstairs office . We camped out there.
