This is not a new development, but the noises my plumbing makes have been bugging me for some time.

Problem 1: downstairs loo. When the cistern refills, the plumbing makes a sort of low resonant "hummmmmmm" noise, which varies in intensity but can be heard throughout the house. Upstairs loo does not do this ( Read more... )

3 is certainly water hammer. 1 and 2 might be related and my sixth sense says to sniff around for air locks too. Googling for water hammer turns up a few hits with some plausible thoughts, but given my plumbing track record you perhaps ought not to consider me the most reliable source ;-)

I am reminded of staying over at a friend's rented house in London several years ago which had the usual rented-house cowboy plumbing. On attempting to run the downstairs bath I quickly christened it "disco plumbing" ...
