O fandom! A very long post about LJ.

ETA: We're fucked. LJ is officially no longer fandom safe space. I'm not going to say get off now, but if you participate in a fandom or support anything illegal, you should consider either switching to a basic account or make sure you have a name reserved on GreatestJournal or JournalFen. The lady who got Pornish removed -- well, her blog is Read more... )

this is a fucking fantastic post. now that i'm not livid with rage over the Six Apart interview and can actually see straight, I'm really glad you made the points you made about the legal issues and the TOS, and YES YES YES to the bit about not going after WFI.

Seriously, who cares about WFI, it's a one-woman nutjob show. This is about our relationship with livejournal.

Just. God, yes, to everything.

Heh, this n00b Barak has posted to news being like "OHSHIT We fucked up hard." Not that they haven't already damaged a lot of the good will many of us had. And he did answer the question I was asking, namely, where in the hell was Brad during all this?

I saw that. Seems like a good start, but it'd be pretty easy to take a bad step from here. It seems like he's still calling fandom perverts, and only apologising for the Lolita discussion and rape survivior group:

Another issue we needed to deal with was journals that used a thin veneer of fictional or academic interest in events and storylines that include child rape, pedophilia, and similar themes in order to actually promote these activities. While there are stories, essays, and discussions that include discussion of these issues in an effort to understand and prevent them, others use a pretext to promote these activities.

The other part that pisses me off is this:

There were a number of profiles that expressed “interest” in activities that most of us would agree put children at risk, notably pedophilia and child rape. Both in the instructions for profiles and in other places on the site we make it clear that interests listed should be evaluated within the context of “I like x”, “I’m in favor of x” or “I support x”.NOWHERE ( ... )
