All my life growing up, I never really thought about what a home was. I was a footloose child, easily moving in and out from one place to another. Never homesick when I stayed over at friends' houses when younger, never once looked back when I moved out of my parent's house to start college, always moving once or twice a year for the next ten ( Read more... )

There really is something to that sweat equity thing, isn't there? It adds financial value but it also adds soul value. Very cool!

When I made the decision to rent my house out rather than sell it, I was making all kinds of related decisions to invest in it: doing it up and more. I started to think about it... why this house, why not some other house? The quick answer is that I couldn't afford to change to another, but there's more to it than that, too. The cats (all dead now) used to go in and out of the cat flap; I stood taking photos of the big tree; I've worked on the computers in that tiny room with the flowery bush just outside. It's bright, it's compact, it's well-located. And it's my house... as simple as that. :-).

It's funny how a place does get its hooks in you.
