DC Comics: eliminating non-buyer's remorse.

I have been eye-crossingly enraged by DC "Senior Story Editor"* Ian Sattler's comments at Heroes Con, yesterday, the sheer stupidity of which keeps on enfolding like an enormous corpse-flower. Specifically, Sattler said:A serious topic came up about how characters who are minorities who happened to be legacy characters like Ryan Choi are killed ( Read more... )

"The racism inherent in a Chinese character whose power is her terrifying fertility should be apparent, but litter makes me so mad I can't even. Sows have litters. Dogs have litters. Women have BABIES, you unbelievable piece of shit."

Sows have piglets. Dogs have puppies. I think you might want to check some definitions. A litter is any birthing of multiple offspring. I suppose you could say that its derogatory to the offspring to call their birthing a "litter", but heck they're only alive for a week anyway, I don't think they've got time to be offended when they're off fighting super villains.

And I certainly never imagined that her powers were racist in any way. Just for the sake of complete clarity: we're saying that its racist for a Chinese character to give birth to ten super powered offspring because China currently has a very high population growth rate?

Pretending that 'litter' is not primarily used to describe animal births and does not have dehumanizing connotations is naive.

But I guess as a straight white dude, you can pretend whatever the hell you like, since no one's likely to dehumanize you.

"I am not qualified to discuss it as a story, since I only know it from the statements its writers have made"

Might want to check into it. I haven't read it either, but everyone I've heard from says that she's really only portrayed in a sympathetic light.

As to my ability to critique fiction because of my ethnicity or assumed sexual identification, that doesn't seem here or there.

Oh, hey, no, it's not that you can't critique fiction because you're a straight white dude; lots of straight white dudes do fine! You can't critique fiction because you're lacking the necessary logical tools.

If the same derogatory imagery can be used for so many groups then it doesn't really seem fair to claim this is a case of "anti-asian racism"

Let me see if I understand this. If you use a derogatory stereotype against more than one group, it isn't derogatory anymore? I don't think that's gonna fly. Just look at how many ethnic and religious groups get hit with "lazy", for instance.
