I RETURN!

So, this weekend, I kind of went on a bender reading girl-werewolf* book (as you can see here, where I am fairly careful to add books as I read 'em, because honestly, otherwise I lose track) specifically, from the Mercedes Thompson and Kitty Norville serieses ( Read more... )

...I was not previously aware there was a girl-werewolf genre. One of my favourite fantasy books is Nadya by Pat Murphy (featuring a bisexual girl werewolf in 19th century America) and I've been itching to find more werewolf fic ever since reading it.

This probably isn't much like that. These are a bit pulpy, although obviously I find them good fun.

Oh, I love me some pulpy urban fantasy too. I just haven't run into much werewolf fiction, let alone urban fantasy where the female lead is the supernatural creature instead of a human in love with a supernatural creature.

Man, I keep looking and looking for the first Kitty book (I hate reading stuff out of order!) but can't find it anywhere. I may have to just order the sucker.

I also hate the out-of-order, because I have book three on my shelf for a year while I looked for book two, hence this orgy of reading.

I don't think I've mentioned that I appreciate you putting up these reviews. Especially concerning certain things in the book (like rape). I usually feel the need to get a good supernatural mystery book and read it during the vacation. So I use your guide and reviews to make sure I avoid things that I can't or won't read about.

Um, that was a really long way to say thanks for the reviews. Sorry about that.

They are very useful. Thanks for doing it. Plus I found my way to goodreads through you too!

i would very much like to read this girl werecoyote series, but the kitty norville series let me down, and once bitten, twice as likely to bite others, and hey, that metaphor got away from me.

*applauds the table*

Can I ask what about the Kitty series let you down?

For me, I made it to book 5, and then had to stop because I felt so betrayed by the romantic relationship not being with the person I thought it should be with (I know that construction is confusing, but I don't want to spoil you if you didn't make it that far!) that I just couldn't take it anymore. What I found really interesting about it is that Carrie Vaughn is like JK Rowling in that she really learned to write by the third book.

I'm in the middle of book five, so I don't want to be spoilered (thank you for your forbearance!) but I am dancing from foot to foot in an I-have-to-pee! way in anticipation of finding out what you mean.

Oh, I should clarify that the romantic relationship goes in what I considered the wrong direction in book 3. I just didn't realize it was going to completely ruin my enjoyment of the series for two more books.

but the Kitty Norville ones have some awesome moments too, as when a Furry calls into her radio show to talk about werewolves.

The radio show is easily the part I love best about the Kitty books--both getting to read about people's supernatural dramas, and getting to listen to Kitty going, no, actually, this stuff does not work the way you think it does, screw the romance of the dark side, and did I mention that you are not the ruler of all creation because you are a vampire? So there. (Also her line about Dracula being about saving the world with office technology made me laugh really, really hard.)

I actually find the radio show bits a bit embarrassment squicky, in that she gets people to call in and talk about private stuff in front of a national audience, and it's a big part of her character that this is what she loves and is good at. For me it's something I regard with horrified fascination.
