Is this how other people do it?

When I'm writing, (fiction) there is generally one scene I want to write, or a series of them, and in starting, I'm playing a game of chicken, trying to see how close I can start to that scene. I don't actually like writing, I just want to achieve that scene or scenes. In the case of drabbles, of course, you start at that scene, but frequently ( Read more... )

Oh totally! In fact I have taken too seriously the injunction to only write the parts that interest me so that my interest shows in the writing; I always have to go back and add more in so it makes sense to other people.

I hear you. :) I do like the process of writing, a bit, but what I LOVE is having that scene or scenes complete in words outside my head where I can look at it and so can other people.

The way I say it is that I really don't like writing; but I very much enjoy having written.

Pretty much. I have a scene in my head, playing out like a piece of a movie, or a series of stills, and the dim, fluid knowledge of the rest of the film having happened before and going to happen, which I don't usually want to write but have to, so it makes sense. What I love writing is just the initial inspiring scenes. The rest, I have to force myself to first convey into scenes as well (though less awesome ones), so I can "see" everything clearly, and then write down. The fact that a) "the rest" is usually the majority and b) it's damn hard and eventually disappointing to put my mental images into words, is probably the reason why I rarely write at all.

This! Exactly this, to the point that sometimes I worry that I ought to be writing screenplays, because the stuff that isn't dialogue and action is so damn *hard*.

Shamefully, dialogue is somewhat hard for me as well. -_-;; (Likely because I write in English but don't often have a chance to speak it, so colloquialisms don't flow easily and characters tend to sound a bit stilted.)
Probably I should stop writing altogether... Except there is action and epic landscape descriptions... *ggg* And more importantly, worlds in my head that want out. Also, it's the only thing that keeps me halfway sane sometimes.

But it's good to know I'm not the only one who works from "movie" scenes. If there was any chance for me to go into directing, I would.
