The way to insult a demon is to call it a woman

cereta just posted on her disappointment with the charterization of Dean in this season of Supernatural, which led me to this series of posts by trollprincess tracking gendered insults across season one, two, and three. Her conclusion:But basically here's what it looks like ( Read more... )

For a moment putting aside the racism and sexism (because you know I agree with you there, so much) I just wanted to say that I feel bad to see my fandom friends burned by a work of fiction they love or at least once did.

Yeah, and I hate that it's "Oh no, here we go again" Why does this have to be so damn normal?

Why? Why does it ALWAYS seem to happen?

(And it's seldom a slow slide, either. No, no. It's usually a big old War Games style cannonball into the deep end of bad behavior.)

Welllll… I think it's more that we don't want to see it, so we excuse/ignore/just plain don't see the marginal cases, until finally there's something so big we can't overlook it. I don't have any particular evidence in mind for comics, (it's pretty easy to find warning signs in SPN, sadly) but my suspicion is that it's there.

I mean, who the hell wants to be offended by media they're enjoying? It's not really rewarding to do.

Yeah, pretty much every item on the short list of things I don't just love stupid about this show all relates to how it handles gender/sexuality.

I thought I was numb to a lot of this crap by now, but then, the show needed to quickly fill in backstory for a female character & immediately jumped to rape... Oh, Supernatural, I know you know there are more enjoyable ways to break my heart.

Preach it! I was talking to petronelle yesterday about her new-old fandom, Due South, and said, "Well, at least you know it's not going to break your heart. I mean, at least not in the bad way." Because of course, it has its moments of heartbreak, but at least they're not betrayal by the show itself.

Ah, thank you. That's exactly how I felt & haven't been quite able to articulate - betrayed - that the Show can be so good at paying off on my emotional investment one minute & then so ugly & lazy the next.

The episode in which a Hunter of color survives is #3.15 "Time is on My Side". I won't advise you not to watch, because there are some lovely moments between the brothers, but I will warn you that it was one of the squickiest episodes for me where gender is concerned.

Oh, igh. Maybe I will just give it the thumbs-up from afar. I don't think I can handle any more gender-squick. (Gender-squick: like gender-fuck, but not sexy.)

I think I first realized that season three was going to hurt me when a black man was forced to drink gasoline. I'm not sure why I have the perception that this crime has associations with racial-hatred

That's when I knew something was very, very wrong. I felt like I was watching a lynching scene, with all those white-people demons surrounding the black couple and then...that. I felt sick. Haven't felt safe watching the show since, and the show only kept on hurting me until I finally gave it up.

Ugh, yes, exactly. It was really nauseating.
