Renato is incredibly sweet--one of the nicest people with whom I've had the chance to correspond. And my friend Katie, who ended up covering for me at Comic Con, says he's just as wonderful in real life.

Actually, his written English is great--enough that we were able to communicate really easily--but we don't speak a common language. He's fluent in Spanish and Portugese and has a little bit of functionally useless school-style spoken English--about the same as my very rusty high school Spanish. We had this great plan for meeting up for drinks at Comic Con; if we couldn't find a translator, we were going to arrange simple objects and describe them to each other, since that's about all we could do...
