♛ in depth
Personality:
In a word, inertia. Jori often comes across as slow, or, if you're feeling less charitable, stupid. That last part isn't quite true, however; given enough time, Jori can figure things out as well as anyone. Not so much when it comes to people, unfortunately - a straightforward person himself, Jori tends to take people at face value. This is not the same as being naive or gullible; it's just that Jori has a hard time seeing past whatever people show him. He might be able to pick out that a person is sad, but have no idea why they're feeling that way.
Then there's the second part of inertia: Jori can be slow to act. He is a big believer in peace and order; in his mind, there is just a way that things should be, and he's content to live within those boundaries. This same ideal leads him to feeling strongly about justice, honor, and chivalry - those are the guidelines he uses for his own life. Not that he would ever say any of this out loud; Jori lives by his own rules - he doesn't force them on others.
Of course, inertia works both ways: once Jori has his mind set on something he is nearly impossible to budge. There is also a competitive streak in him that cannot always resist a challenge (at least not from Tia). He can be extremely stubborn, and if angered enough he will physically tear down obstacles with his bare hands if he has to. If people ever wonder where the usual temperament of a pyrokinetic is, this is their answer, for Jori can erupt into an absolute rage if pushed to his limit.
In more normal circumstances however, Jori is usually content to cede the lead or limelight to another. This is not an easy surrender - he definitely has his own thoughts and opinions, and he'll speak up if he disagrees. But his style of leadership is one of quiet example; if everyone works as hard as he does, he figures, then everything will work out in the end. His problems with understanding people do make it difficult for him to show much emotion, which can make him seem standoffish, but he is a genuinely caring and devoted individual. His sense of humor, much like the rest of him, is understated; when he does make a rare joke, it's not unusual for him to have just a sidelong glance and faint quirk to his lips as he sees how the other person reacts.
If Jori seems at times to be a rather simple person, it's not a label he would object to. He would merely shrug and say, "simple things for a simple life". Which in Jori's view, it is. His biggest goal and motivation is to uphold his family's traditions and fulfill what he sees as his duty: namely following and protecting Mag while somehow cooperating with Tia. This causes him a little bit of grief - just his luck that he turned out huge to their tiny, a physical difference that makes him feel like he should definitely be the guardian, when both of them are more than capable of dealing for themselves. Otherwise Jori is not the most ambitious of people. He imagines that one day he will return to El and take over the farm, end up having a family of his own, and continuing the cycle. He just didn't want to stay there his whole life, though he knew he couldn't just roam randomly. Estrasia seemed like the perfect solution to him - contact with people from all corners of the world and all walks of life, while still doing something meaningful and worthwhile with his life.
Because of Jori's slowness and calm attitude - not despite it - he is actually a very good teacher of his subject. Because of his own homeschooling, his classes tend to be a little informal. Part of that is that he holds them outside when possible due to the potential consequences of a pyrokinetic's power going out of control. Some of the other powers don't have such drastic issues, but Jori is universally relaxed with everyone and doesn't panic even when there is a problem. It's another thing for him to shrug and accept - powers will go out of control, that's just part of life. All of this combined gives his class a laid-back atmosphere that avoids putting more stress on the student and potentially weakening their control. If Jori is proud of anything other than his connection to Magnhild, it is this.

AU Background:
Jori was born and raised in El, specifically the town of Herlie, the oldest child of an unusual pair of dairy farmers. Not because of their farm, as that was incredibly common in the area, but because they both had powers. In fact, there were a good number of powered family members, almost all of them earth manipulators, with a handful of pyromancers and one or two outliers. What did this mean for Jori? Well, several things, the first of which being that he was homeschooled in his power by his mother, allowing him to attend a regular school as well as help out on the farm.
As it turns out, however, there was a reason why there were so many powered folks in his family tree, and why they had almost universally sought out other people with similar powers to marry and settle down with. His family had another tradition that Jori inherited, as both the oldest and the best with his powers: they were guardians of another, serving alongside Tia's family, competing as often as cooperating. Jori's family focused on the absolute safety of the heir, developing and training defensive rather than offensive tactics. Though of course they willingly fought as well. But Jori agreed with his ancestor's philosophy: it's foolish to leave your home unguarded and open to attack while you seek out foes.
Thus Jori found himself thrown together with Magnhild and Tia. He couldn't really object to the situation, as he found himself greatly respecting Mag and, well, mostly getting along with Tia. He actually enjoyed himself most of the time, when he wasn't getting scolded by the lolis. Which seemed to happen a lot more than he thought it should. Well, it was hardly a big price to pay, and it was his duty.
Jori didn't mind when this called for him to leave Herlie, as it allowed him to indulge his slight wanderlust. He was saddened when he was forced to leave his riding cow behind, but sacrifices had to be made. When life led him to Estrasia he originally considered the job of groundskeeper, but a stray remark had him determined to prove that he could be an excellent teacher. Thus he chose the other thing he regards as his specialty, and he hasn't regretted that decision a bit.
Appearance: Over six feet tall and fairly powerfully built, Jori would probably look intimidating if it wasn't for the sleepy cast to his brown eyes and the slight slouch in his posture. He wears his hair pretty long, but not to mullet length; the tips reach his jawline, with the back just an inch longer. His appearance is usually neat, at least by preference, but Jori has no hesitations when it comes to rolling up his sleeves and absolutely no reservations about dirt. So while he isn't running around in jeans and a t-shirt, his clothes usually aren't fancy because he figures they'll get ruined sooner or later.

Injuring/Maiming: Injuring is fine, anything super serious that would interfere with his duty (say, losing an arm) let's talk about first?
Killing: Ask about this one first. He's a guardian! He can't do a good job if he's dead!
Hugging, Kissing, etc.: ...Sure, though expect confusion. Intense confusion. (Except for hugs. He secretly likes hugs.)
Deaging, Genderswapping, etc.: Go for it.
Mindreading: Simple man, simple thoughts. He won't be shielded but don't expect to get anything too precious.
