In defense of "Watchmen"

This was primarily written in response to some posts that were made at work by someone who simply proclaimed the movie was a waste of time and by someone else who walked out of the movie about halfway through . . .

I'm really surprised to see a couple of dismissive posts here about Watchmen, especially without a lot of information backing up as ( Read more... )

Therein lies one of my issues with Hollywood. They can finally get something like Watchmen made, but they gotta "sell" it to the masses, who, let's be honest, mostly go to movies to become mindless, drooling vegetables for a couple hours. how to sell this one? Well, it's got superheroes in it, and those are big right now (which is the only way it got made in the first place), so they make a trailer and tell people it's another superhero film, but better, because they're different, and there's a mystery, and it's dark (and no, I swear, it doesn't sound ANYTHING like another Batman film!).

In the end, yeah, I think a lot of people will be disappointed because it's not a typical superhero film. Same way they're disappointed with other films because they've been allowed to pigeonhole the film into a category ahead of time (either because they're assuming, or they've been told!), and it turns out to be something different, more or less than the assumption or just plain wrong.

Meanwhile, a 2nd Iron Man film and a 4th Spider-man film ( ... )
