They look down on Europeans. Referring to Europe as "The Mainland" implies, not only that they're *part* of Europe, but that they're not the most important part.

According to Wikipedia, the source of much knowledge :), People in Great Britian would tend to consider the main island "The mainland", with the other British isles being not the mainland.

Which is a reasonable view from the perspective of someone who lives there.

The continent, which always struck me as funny because it implies that the UK is not part of the continent, ie not part of Europe.
