And not just 'clever actors' but 'collateral damage' according to some. Conspiracy theories seem to be more and more prevalent and hitting the mainstream instead of being ignored as deluded ramblings by racist bigots

The wording of the 2nd Amendment provides for a citizen's militia, which the extreme gun enthusiasts interpret as "we demand our assault weapons whose only purpose is to kill as many people as possible, and you will pry them away from us at your peril

I've just been reading some really good Daily Kos articles about gun control - this one is particularly good at deconstructing all the arguments against it. There are so many people desperate for change - just, it seems, not where it matters, in the Senate, in local government, and on the news networks.
After the massacre at Dunblane, Britain outlawed handguns and severely restricted other firearms. That diary I rec'd looks at how a major incident in Australia led to severe restrictions. Yet in the US, the NRA and their like refuse to change or act, no matter how terrible and frequent incidents become. You have every right to be wound up about it. It's terrible to think there's little the public can do aside protest loudly and peacefully. Of course there's hope: Obama is in office, and with public opinion moving on this issue, he may be able to finally act.
I don't understand people who would say stuff like this. It's so cruel and crazy.
I'm hopeful that Obama will be able to get more restrictions on guns. Sometimes it seems like the NRA would like to sell people personalized nuclear bombs.
It's growing like wildfire on FB, Twitter, blogs, etc. American's just love their conspiracies - especially when they can blame the government for staging everything. The trouble is that with the ubiquitous nature of FB, a lot of ordinarily rational people are starting to wonder if it's true because there hasn't been much push-back. Hopefully that's changing.
Honesty, I think this dark side of America has always been with us, but something about the election of Obama has really set loose the crazy. These people really believe that he is capable of anything, while at the same time deriding him as stupid, lazy and incompetent - cognitive consistency is not their strong suit.
Sometimes it seems like the NRA would like to sell people personalized nuclear bombs. Even as I'm typing this, I'm sure that someone, somewhere, is seriously discussing how they can do this.
I can't believe that anyone could really believe a rumor like that. Even if it weren't so evil, it's illogical. For one thing, since Obama's been pushing for more gun control, people have been stocking up on personal weapons. So there aren't less guns around now, are there? It's so disturbing.
Disappointing that being above it all doesn't work in politics. I think one reason Obama had trouble debating Romney was that he didn't want to sink down to Romney's level. Some accusations are so absurd one shouldn't have to answer them.
That the crazies have gotten crazier since Obama makes me think racism is a big part of it :(
