If I thought I could get away with having both a cat and a dog I'd possibly do it. However, Zara is barely amenable to Jojo and I've seen her get at times scared of my parents dogs when they come or take swipes at them.

I'm not as concerned with dogs being inside during the day (granted, my parents have their dogs inside all the time which is another matter).

There is a beautiful and HUGE husky I pass driving home who is chained up often when I come home from work. They don't have a fence and the dog seems happy and just lays or stands most of the time (not even bothering people who walk along the sidewalk)

Re: 4, are your cats able to get out of the house on their own? I know it seems much more common to allow cats to go outside than in the US where we get warned against it.

The only one of those I'd disagree with is the shedding! My cats, though, are both long haired and shed like crazy! :( My parent's dogs don't seem to shed too much in comparison, but I think it is just that breed.

I'm concerned with dogs being inside during the day if it's a long day. You seem to work crazily short hours. I, on the other hand, have been into chambers before seven on occasion and after 3am on others. Kit can work really long hours too. If we had, like, a farm that we commuted to and the dogs could just run around it till we got home that would be fine. In the size of flat we can afford in London -- totally not OK ( ... )

My hours are a bit less just because I officially work for myself and come in a bit later than other people. The office opens at 9 AM and it's rare that anyone is here much before that. The secretary/receptionist doesn't even usually make it until 9:15-9:30. It closes at 5 pm and at that point we leave (one attorney will sometimes stay a bit later, but usually he's gone by 6, I'd say. I've heard horror stories of some of my classmates working at firms with insane hours, but I doubt I could ever do that.

The husky's situation is not ideal, but he seems to be doing well as far as I can tell. He's a huge dog too and I just today saw someone walking (what I'm going to guess was him) down the way.

I either didn't realize they were fully outdoor now or if you were just still planning on it. Zara was an outdoor/indoor one when I got her, but she's taking well to being indoor only. Except she will pee the carpet at times still.

I totally agree. Especially with #3 and #6. Dogs are cute (well... SOME of them are) but that's really it. I'm not a passionate cat person either but I could imagine living in the same house with one & even enjoying it. With a dog... no way.

I know there are some batty cat people out there, but I think on the whole people who have cats are less mad about them than people who have dogs. Because one of the main reasons to chose a cat for a pet over a dog, if you just want something furry and warm and living around the house (especially if you live alone) is that cats require less commitment. A dog is a big responsibility, as far as I can see. And they smell, did I mention that?! You'd have to love them a lot to overlook living with that smell.

i never get why we are supposed to be cat or dog people, like you can only like one. i think they are both awesome! agree with your logic about why one is easier to keep though.

Totally, I love all animals, but I'm realistic about what I am willing and able to commit to and what's fair on the animal I choose to live with me.

Totally more a cat person than a dog person... but I just love my sister's dog way too much. And he's in London now actually. I personally think he's living the high life at the mo'. He's let out in morning and also at the end of the day. And then there are the other outings they have to parks, and around the city, and outside the city.

In the end, though, for me, cats are tons easier and I'd own one of them over a dog in a heartbeat!
