Excess packaging

The problem does seem more out of control in the UK than in North America. I had to come here to see a supermarket with the vast majority of its fresh fruit displayed on styrofoam trays with plastic clingfilm (what we back home call "saran wrap") binding it all together. I remember at home I used to pick up my fruit and veg loose, put it in my ( Read more... )

Wait a sec. ALL produce is packed in foam and plastic wrap? How on earth are you supposed to know if it's ripe? I noticed in that article it mentioned having avocados wrapped up in a package. Um, when I buy avocados, I squeeze them to figure out if they're ripe or not. How can you do that if it's all packaged up? I grab plastic baggies to hold my produce, but that's mostly to protect them from the germy gross baskets they have at the store, and the baggies get reused as trash bags at home. But foam and plastic wrap? Weird!

Not all produce is, but any produce may be, and much often is. And yes, it is a pain in the butt in terms of checking things out up close and personal.

This distresses me so much. It is much better for produce here in the US. (Though we make up for it a million-fold with, say, SUVs.)

All our other stuff is overpackaged, though, and I guess this has made me think about how I can reduce the amount of needless waste I buy.

Though I feel a bit bad for the people working the till, as they take lots of crap as it is...
