I didn't make the soup because I didn't have quite enough carrots, which was as good an excuse as any for me. But that's OK, I am better today, and planning a shopping expedition to Waitrose (also going to pick up another flat of cat food, I have to stock up on the stuff for while I'm away, but I can't buy three flats at once, I'd never be able to ( Read more... )

As you already pointed out, loads of people want to be scientists AND think about what work they could get which includes this and so they choose to teach - and end up frustrated.
The scientific part of teaching is so very, very little, almost not recognizable.

The thing that made me think that teaching really might not be your thing, was this sentence you said:

I don't feel that there's a fire in my belly
for teaching. You know, I have had my great moments and feelings when riding a horse, too, but I quit riding years ago because of what you said: there was no fire for it anymore ( ... )

Personally, I think that if you go in for teaching, you should be doing University level teaching where you can be arguing/debating about the more intellectual stuff with your students.

I don't really see you teaching younger kids, as I don't think you're someone who goes "Yay! Kids are great! It's wonderful to be a part of starting them off learning about this!" Which is more the attitude that goes with primary & secondary education.

I think you'd be happier & better suited when it comes to discussing someone's dissertation with them or questioning the meaning that the author had intended given the socio-political climate it was written in.
