I'm curious about this "pledge" thing. There are several good self-publishing companies that don't charge anything for set-up. Is there a reason why they don't just upload their book and tell people about it?

I don't know, really.

If I had to guess, I'd assume that perhaps it's due to the non-profit nature of the whole thing; or maybe they want closer control over print quality and all that.

But I'm just relaying the news; I'm not involved with the whole thing otherwise, so this really is just guesswork. :)
