It's more or less the same thing in France. You used to be able to live rather comfortably with a minimum wage for a full time job. Not anymore... We say that "l'argent appelle l'argent". It means the more money you'll spend, the more you'll get. To some extend of course.. But the higher salary you'll give someone, the more this person will buy things, and therefore the whole economy will rise, one person, one salary at a time... Shame it doesn't seem that simple to people in charge..
Sometimes it seems as if the People In Charge are merely out to keep themselves at the top of the pile and those at the bottom right down there - whatever their political leanings.
