An NLE, for those that don’t know, is a None Linear Editor; a video editor whose goal is to splice together different cuts into one. So, I decided it was time to replace the main system drive on Benares. The thing’s a decade old 10 GB drive that’s slowing down. So, since I rearranged the data on Pai, I could safely remove one of the four drives in her. It’s a 60 GB Seagate, about three years old, and been running flawlessly as a data store the whole time. Holy shit, these things are cheap now. I remember paying just shy of $400 for a 4x CD-R drive. Never mind that my first DVD-R drive was a 1x slug that cost a small fortune. Panasonic's cartridge-compatible DVD-RAM drives are still a bit expensive, as well as slightly rare, but DVD-RAM just didn't catch on that well. Which is a crying shame as ( Read more... )

Yeah, it was a driver issue. Installed the latest ones and things now work. Course I had to reboot four times and manually uninstall and reinstall the new drivers before they worked ... Why can't I just run the install and things just work right the first time? >_

Well, I bought a new video card the other day. My old one was a Radeon 9000 I bought over two years ago. It’s old and Maya is breaking its balls. So I looked on Newegg to see what was cheap buy relatively new. And lo the Radeon X1600 Pro is barely over a hundred bucks.
