I like the broken feeling, the panic, and the scattered references to life-before, and how Edward kind of wonders at Cecil and I know it's not supposed to be pervy but this is me so I'm kind of reading perv into it XD
I always wondered why the FF games didn't do this with status effects more often. Some of them truly are terrifying. FF9's were particularly bad - I distinctly remember thinking "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT THE REST OF MY GUYS SHOULD BE RUNNING AROUND SCREAMING WTF" during several battles. (Probably ones involving Heat. Or maybe Frozen. *shudder*)
Mute, by comparison, usually seems kinda tame. But for summoners...yes. Rather crippling, when you think about it. Thank you for thinking about it, and for putting it in words so damn well.
I'm fascinated by status effects, really, and making them work within the context of the game -- because, I mean, you have to stay realistic. (i.e. in this case, Cecil had two choices, truck on with Rydia muted, or go back to Kaipo and sleep in the Inn.) But I always find it funny that these sorts of things don't get used more often. Stop. Stop. There is a spell that freezes you in your place. Is anything more terrifying?
And, uh, YEAH. I remember using Hades like all the time in FFIX because of those ass-kicking status effects. They were pretty screwed up, too.
Exactly. Ugh, Stop. The only thing I found creepy in the forest in Sabin's scenario were the Ghosts, because of frickin' Pause. Always killed them as quick as I could. ...then came the train, where there were many things creepy.
I don't remember abusing Hades much - but Doomtrain? Oh yeah. (Of course, that game really just boiled down to one status effect anyway in Vit-0. ...which is pretty messed up itself...)
