Summary:
She finds the flowers growing next to the little stream behind the castle and knows that they belong to the Queen. They’re the same white-pink colour as her hair, petals in delicate curls just like she styles it now that she’s Queen and the war is over. Rydia picks them without thinking: even Rosa’s name is a flower, and Rydia knows she deserves them.
She sneaks up into Rosa’s bedroom like she does every day (Rydia is an early riser, borne of her time Underground; Rosa used to rise with the sun, but her early pregnancy makes her sleep now). The Queen awakens to the scent of flowers and Rydia’s warmth in the bed beside her.
It has been like this for weeks. Cecil has gone to gather Kain, and Rosa could only hold back her tears and loneliness for so long; and Rydia has always been lonely. Rosa cries in the mornings and Rydia comforts her as best she can, curled up behind the Queen with her arms around her. Sometimes Rosa squirms, turns backwards, smiles, kisses her, and then the comfort becomes mutual: fingers and limbs and laughing, awkward little sighs.
This morning is one of those: Rosa awakens in Rydia’s thin arms and turns her head back for the kiss she knows is waiting, her archer’s fingers running themselves through Rydia’s hair and down her gentle curves. The scent of the wild roses is strong and fresh - intoxicating. And both girls may still be lonely but they can hide it behind roses and bedsheets, at least for now.
