The signal workers were on strike today (and will be until noon on Friday) so it was awkward getting home. I got into the station at 5.30, and the last train home was written on the board: “Expected 1731”.
Brilliant, I thought, it’s late. I suppose that makes sense if there has been a strike on for half the day.
Then I rounded the corner to Platform 11 to see my train accelerating away. I think maybe the work experience kid got confused between “expected to arrive” and “expected to depart”. It left when the board said it was about to arrive. :-(
My father was on that train. I waited around for half an hour then got a bus home. We both got back to the house within minutes of each other. So it wasn’t really worth my while rushing. I think I’ll just leave the office at the normal time tomorrow and head straight for the bus stop.
I’ll take a book too. I’m emptying my book case this evening, so I can move it out of the room. The joiner’s coming tomorrow to knock a hole in my ceiling, to install an attic ladder. It will come down exactly where my bookcase currently sits. So my room is now strewn with thigh-high piles of books.
I came across a copy of Ken MacLeod’s The Star Fraction, which I’m pretty sure I read when I bought, but I don’t remember much about it. But I read another of his, The Stone Canal, more recently and greatly enjoyed it. So I’ll give it another go. I’m in the mood for a stretching science fiction book.
That being said, I’ve just spotted The Children of Men which I got for Christmas. Maybe I should read that instead? Probably best to - I know I’ve definitely not read that.
