Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Just quickly - I'm donating plenty to charity shops at the moment, as I begin to pack and prepare myself and my stuff for a move, but I don't think Oxfam or PDSA would be too grateful for this book; would you? Over-explanation copied directly from the 'description' I gave the accompanying picture when I hosted it on Flickr (about three minutes ago ( Read more... )

I didn't, but what an eminently sensible idea. I wish more publishers of fatass books would do the same!

After giving up on Susanna Clarke after three attempts at lugging the book around in my book bag...

Why didn't I think of that?

Maybe you have more innate respect for literature than I do?

Or just fewer knives...

The pleasure would be all mine :-) I don't recall you having moved in the last couple of years but just to be on the safe side... do you still live on W**zel Avenue? My thoughts are with you and P., for what it's worth xxx

I'm not usually given to book butchery, honest. I can get terribly upset when I see old or vintage books being hacked up for projects by enthusiastic crafty types - something deep in my soul cries sacrilege!

I cried when I both read and watched the film of Ray Bradbury's Farenheit 451 :(

That said, much as I would agree totally with your terms of butchery and sacriledge, I am considering sacrificially burning the pile of poo that is Dan Brown's 'Davinci Code'. I think I got as far as page 30 before I slung it back onto the bookshelf. I feel slightly embarrassed to have it listed in my LibraryThing...

Hah!! I think even sacrilege would make an exception for Dan Brown :-D

That said, you shouldn't feel embarrassed about the listing - it's an acknowledgement that you've at least given the book a go. It's always better to know whereof you speak, even if you have nothing nice to speak once you've informed yrself! ;-)
