Getting her some food was excellent of you. I can't cope with the swarms of needy in East Hastings, so any time I am down there I am more focused on my survival than their needs. The city is doing a decent job of trying to help people at least. By that I mean it isn't nearly enough, but much more than most cities contribute. The problem is that anyone with the ability to leave that place does, leaving only the most desperate/dependent people behind.

from what ive been told, it sounds like its quite a coherent community down there, but of course one that doesnt exactly breed betterment. i dont envy the city its responsibilities in this respect; mental health and homelessness are difficult situations at the best of times and to a large extent this isnt a problem of vancouver's creation. still there was something particularly catastrophic about the scene. and for me it represented this general failure of developed countries to fully commit and deal with these issues. while there are always individuals and groups dedicated to the assistance of these people, it feels like at some level we lack the social and political will to make a concerted effort. but i guess thats true of many things isnt it?
