You may want to bite the bullet and get a new hard drive. About a year ago my external with all my music started randomly losing directories (well, corrupting them). I never lost anything major or irreplaceable, but getting a new drive, while a little costly, is has made me as happy as a little girl, which is considerably happy because once a drive starts doing that, it usually means it'll keep having problems even after scanning and all that stuff.
