Chapter Four

If there is one thing that Calliope Torres loves most about gymnastics, it is the simple fact that tiny girls doing big tricks equals big breaks. Big breaks that she has the good fortune of resetting, or thrown out of joint bones that she can pop back into place. And sometimes if she's really lucky, and her patient is a real dare devil, the broken bones can not be fixed with a simple resetting and a cast. Sometimes the breaks require surgery, sometimes these girls require screws and pins within their legs. While, that may not always be good news to the young girl who has the big dreams of winning gold at the Olympics, it is fantastic news to an Ortho Surgeon who is desperately searching for a reason to not think about her pregnant girlfriend.

It has been exactly four days since she informed Arizona that when Friday comes, she'll be in a foreign country with Owen Hunt, saving the lives of people who don't necessarily ask to be saved. It has been four days since she informed her girlfriend that her father somehow managed to convince her that the soldiers desperately need a doctor to help them and being a doctor is the most safest job in this war. It has been four days since she looked into Arizona's blue eyes and saw the amount of worry and pain instilled within them. Pain that she has inflicted. It has been exactly four days since their relationship took a drastic turn into a direction that Calliope isn't so comfortable with.

There is an awkward silence around their apartment now. Every morning, Arizona pleads Calliope to not go to work and every morning she must bid her girlfriend farewell, every morning she must pretend like she doesn't see those tears in her eyes when they share their goodbye kiss. She knew Arizona would hurt over the decision that she made about joining the Army, especially since she lost her own brother to the war, but she never thought she would hurt this badly.

Does she regret letting Colonel Robbins talk her into signing up for something like this? Well, she isn't so sure. But what she does regret, is the fact that she kept the truth from Arizona so long. Because maybe, just maybe, if she had told her sooner, than all of this hurt could have been prevented. Would she have accepted the news had she heard it sooner? Would she be okay with letting her go if she could spend more time with her? Those were the answers that Callie would never have.

She sighs as she grabs a chart from one of the nurses, smirking when she notices that it is another break and the girl, is in fact, a gymnast. Training season has just begun in Seattle, Washington and Callie could not find herself more happier. She knocks softly on the patients door before she enters and instantly, she is taken aback by the familiarity of her patient. The young girl had chestnut brown curls that bounce carelessly around her shoulders with a deep shade of off-set blue orbs. She was only seventeen years old, yet, Callie found herself feeling as if she has known the girl much longer than that.

“Hello. I'm going to be your doctor today. I'm Doctor Torres,” Callie exclaims with a warm smile, clutching tight to the files in her hands. The young girl glances up from the black painted fingernail she has eagerly been scratching at for the past ten minutes and flashes her doctor a bright but painful smile.

“Right. Hi. I'm Taylor,” Taylor chuckles with an embarrassed smile. There is something so familiar about her, Callie sighs, something that she can not quite put her finger on, something that ultimately reminds her of Arizona. She smiles, taking a seat on the stool as she flips through her file before her eyes carefully meet her most beautiful off-shade of blue.

“So you hurt your ankle in gymnastics?” asks Callie, her cool fingers softly delicately brushing against the young girl's ankle and Taylor winces, forcing a nod.

“Yeah. I told Coach that I just twisted it but he said that he couldn't take any chances with his prize competitor,” Taylor winces as Callie pushes against the bone in another place. The orthopedist simply smiles at the young girl with sympathetic eyes before she pulls her pen from her lab coat, carefully jotting down notes in her file before deciding to keep the conversation stimulating.

“Well, I guess Coach is just trying to avoid a lawsuit. So this gymnastics thing? You...uh...you like it?” asks Callie, curious about the sport. Because she herself, could never truly understand the thrill of twirling around on bars, and possibly breaking her back. Call her crazy, but she actuallyliked walking.

“I've been doing gymnastics since I was seven years old. First, I just joined because my older sister was doing it. Mom thought it would be easier to keep up with us that way, you know? Since she is a single parent, I suppose she thought it would be easier than having to remember two different practice times or be at two different sporting events on the same day. She never really asked me if I liked it and I never really complained because if Mom was happy then I was happy,” Taylor explains as Callie carefully wraps the injured ankle, apologizing every time Taylor winces in pain.

“Yeah, what about now?” asks Calliope.

“Now? Gymnastics is my passion. Did you know that Shawn Johnson won gold at the Olympics when she was only sixteen years old? Sixteen. I am seventeen years old, can you just imagine if I got to go to the Olympics?! Coach says that I have the skill but I don't know, now with this injured ankle, I think my chances are pretty much shot to hell. But gymnastics is what I love. That is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I mean, you might think I'm crazy because who wants to swing from monkey bars for the rest of her life, right?” Taylor trails off with a brief laugh and Callie mimics the sound with a smile.

“But it's what I love. And when you love something, you don't give it up. No matter what any one else says,” Taylor smiles with a simple shrug of her shoulders. Callie smiles as she pulls away from the young girl, scribbling something in the file before her russet brown eyes find her blue and she wishes that she had that naïve attitude again, that she still had that innocence.

“You can tell your Coach that you were right. It's just twisted. It's probably going to be swelled for a while and you may need to take a few muscle relaxers but you should be just fine. You may need to stay off your ankle for a little while but since I know that you won't do that, I'll just say, don't do anything to strenuous. If it hurts, stop,” Callie explains and Taylor nods her head in understanding. Callie sighs as she slowly stands with a half smile playing upon her lips.

“Hey, kid? You're right. About not giving up gymnastics. Don't ever give up on something that you love. Even if someone tells you that what you are doing is ridiculous, even if someone doesn't agree with it. Fight for what you want because it's your happiness that matters most,” Callie smiles at Taylor before she shuts the door softly behind her. With a content sigh, she walks over to the nurses station, scribbling something in her file before she places it back in the holder and reaches for another.

“Torres!” a familiar voice calls out to her and she turns to see Addison Montgomery storming toward her, her high heels creating their own musical number. Her red curls bounce around her shoulders as her face is drawn together in a tight expression, her eyes full of emotion that causes Callie to simply roll her eyes and twist her fingers in her curls, tugging just slightly.

“Damn,” Callie curses in a whisper. Addison chuckles a harsh laugh as she slams her files down on the nurses counter, her fingers carefully intertwined around one another, and if looks could have killed, Calliope Torres would have just dropped dead in front of the nurses station at Seattle Grace hospital, “I guess you heard.” mumbles Callie as she clicks the pen in her right hand and Addison bellows a laugh.

“I guess you heard?! Yeah, I guess I did hear. Now, would you like to explain to me, what in the hell you think you are doing going off to fight in a war when your girlfriend is seven months pregnant?! A pregnancy that is already high risk as it is!” Addison yells, her voice raising and Callie can almost swear that she can see the vein in Addison's flawless forehead bulging in distress.

“Arizona's brother, Danny...he died in the war. He was a young man, a brilliant young man whose life was cut short long before it should have been. And do you know why? Because there are not enough doctors over there, Addison. There isn't enough doctors over there to save the men and women who make it possible for you and I to sleep safely in our beds at night. I don't...I don't want another family to go through the pain of losing a child, a husband, a wife, a sister, a brother, because there aren't enough doctors there to save them. They save our lives every day, the least we could do is return the favor,” Callie explains, clicking the pen in her hand before she slips it back into her lab coat. Addison shakes her head with a weak laugh, staring at Calliope in the utmost amazement.

“What is going on over there...it's sad. I agree with you. Those men and women..they are the most daring, fearless people, people who are saving the lives of strangers every day. I respect them more than they will ever know. But that doesn't mean that you should go over there and risk your life. There are other doctors. More qualified doctors, like Owen Hunt, who are more prepared for this,” Addison exclaims, her voice raging with that infamous serious tone that can only cause Callie to shake her head.

“I'm the best Orthopedic Surgeon that Seattle Grace has seen in years. You know that, the Chief knows that, and so does Arizona. They need me over there,” Callie replies with a nod of her head, taking the files in her hands with a sigh. She steps forward trying to avoid the scene but instead, Addison steps in front of her, fear, anger and anxiousness written within her beautiful eyes. The eyes that Calliope can not stand to see tears in, the eyes that told her more than Addison Montgomery ever would.

“You know who needs you? Arizona needs you. Both of you agreed to bring this child into the world, do you remember that? You promised to protect and love your son or daughter no matter what the world brought your way. You promised to always be there because both of you know exactly how it important it is to have a stable environment for a child. She gave up her career for a little while to have your child, and this has not been the easiest pregnancy for her,” Addison sighs and Callie rolls her eyes with a chuckle.

“I was there when I made that promise with her, I remember that. And I am doing exactly that. I am protecting our child from the world, from this war. I am keeping my son or daughter safe from the enemies that he or she doesn't even know that they have. So yeah, I remember that promise. And I know this hasn't been the easiest pregnancy for her but I've been there with her every step of the way,” Callie snaps, her brow drawn together in utmost amount of frustration.

“Except for now,” Addison states with a quiet breath, before she is aware that the statement has left her lips. Her tear filled eyes stare at Callie who can't even begin to form the words, she stares at the best friend who she never would have thought would make such a grave sacrifice.

“Addison,” mumbles Callie.

“I'm sorry, that was a little harsh, I didn't mean it that way. I just...what I meant to say was...you know what? Screw it. No, I meant it. Arizona Robbins the most selfless woman that I have ever met in my entire life. She dedicates her life to saving the lives of little children, children who are so full of hope and innocence. She cares about her patients a hell of a lot more than any of the rest of us do and she cares about you,” Addison begins and Callie simply watches, fighting away the tears in her eyes.

“You were a wreck when Erica left you. You just got out of your marriage with George, who slept with Izzie Stevens, to fall in love with the Cardio God who happened to be a woman and she left you because you defended Izzie. You were damaged, you were broken. But Arizona...she came in and she just...she brought you back to life with her dimples and her heelies, and the butterflies on her scrub cap,” sighs Addison and Callie bites the inside of her jaw with a hard shake of her head.

“Don't,” she begs.

“She fell in love with you and you fell in love with her, too. And now, she put her career on hold for you to have this child. And her pregnancy is high risk, both of you know this. Her pregnancy may be problem-free so far but that doesn't mean that it will stay that way. What if her placenta tears and nobody is there? She could lose a substantial amount of blood that will not only put your child's life in danger but hers as well? Arizona needs you, your child needs you,” Addison explains and that is when Callie loses it, all the walls that she has desperately tried to keep up suddenly come tumbling down.

“Damn it, Addison! I know that! Don't you think I know that?! Don't you think that I know that you and every one else thinks that I am being the most selfish, reckless person in the world?! Don't you think I know that I am hurting Arizona?! And it kills me. It fucking kills me! But you don't understand!” Callie snaps, the tears raging in her eyes and Addison simply chuckles. She rocks on heels for a moment before she grabs her files from the station, her eyes colliding with Callie's and a half smile appears on her face.

“You're right, Callie. I don't understand. I could never understand how someone like you could willingly walk away from Arizona Robbins and the child that the two of you share together. I don't understand how you can walk away from them, possibly for forever, willingly. I never thought you would be that person, especially after what happened with George and Erica. But maybe...maybe I don't know you at all,” Addison replies in a mumble before she disappears down the hallway, leaving Callie to drown in her tears and emotions that she never wanted to feel.

---
Calliope turns the keys in the door to the apartment she shares with Arizona with a quiet yawn escaping from her lips. Addison's harsh words echoed through her head all day, she couldn't even enjoy a good surgery because of the red haired Obstetrician. God, she knows what this must look like to other people. She knows that every one else must think that she is such a horrible person for willingly signing her name to the paper, agreeing to go to Iraq when Arizona is nearly at her due date. Every one must think that she is a selfish woman who doesn't care about her girlfriend or her child, when in fact, it is the exact opposite.

She quickly strips herself from the black leather jacket as she enters the apartment, dropping her purse and keys onto the by standing table. Throwing the jacket onto the sofa, she glances around the apartment, smirking when she finds a pizza box stashed onto the counter.

“Ari? Ari, I'm home,” Callie calls out in a sing-song voice but there is no reply.

“'Zona?” Calliope exclaims, awaiting to hear her beautiful voice call out to her but instead, there is only silence. Suddenly Addison's words echo through her head as her heart races in her chest, frantically, she pushes open the cracked bedroom door to find the most beautiful sight. In front of her, laying spiraled onto the bed, is a sleeping Arizona. Callie chuckles with a smile as she climbs into bed beside of her girlfriend, tossing the Glee DVD box onto the floor. She smiles, reaching forward as she brushes a golden strand of her hair behind her ear. Arizona stirs for a moment with a quiet whimper before she scoots toward Callie's warm and inviting body.

“Nothing you confess could make me love you less...” Arizona quietly sings before she gives back into the slumber that is desperately calling her. Callie chuckles as she wraps her arms around the beautiful pregnant woman as she places a discreet kiss upon her forehead.

“I'll stand by you. I'll stand by you, won't let nobody hurt you, I'll stand by you. Take me into your darkest hour and I'll never desert you, I'll stand by you,” Callie sings to her and Arizona faintly smiles as she snuggles close to her. The raven haired beauty simply smirks as she holds her close, placing her hand upon her round baby bump. As her eyes are giving into the sleep deprivation, she feels her child kick beneath her fingertips. She opens her eyes, staring at Arizona who quietly slumbers beside of her as Addison's voice echoes through her head like a broken record.

“Her pregnancy may be problem-free so far but that doesn't mean that it will stay that way. What if her placenta tears and nobody is there? She could lose a substantial amount of blood that will not only put your child's life in danger but hers as well? Arizona needs you, your child needs you,”

“God, what have I done to you? The both of you?” Callie whispers as the tears sting in her eyes. The baby kicks beneath her fingers again as she struggles to close to her eyes, her heart aching for the woman she is undeniably in love with and the perfect child they share together. Her stomach twisting in the thought of losing the both of them because she can not. She can not lose them, no, not like this.
