Summary: The summer before her senior year a series of events happen that change the course of Santana Lopez's life, the first being Brittany deciding that she doesn't want to be a cheerio anymore.
It was about 6pm in the middle of the summer before senior year when a series of events that would change Santana Lopez’s life forever were set into motion. The Latina herself was lying on the blonde’s bed reading The Art of War, while the blonde in question was sitting on her floor Indian style surrounded by a mess of poster board, construction paper, magazines, markers, and glitter cutting and pasting things to the afore mentioned poster board with a fury. Santana folded a page in her book and closed it, turning over so her attention is on Brittany. She looks upon her best friend with amusement before addressing her. “Hey Britt, I’m bored, let’s go out, get some ice cream or something.”
Keeping her focus on the craft project Brittany answers, “ Just let me finish this up San, then we can do whatever you want.” The blonde ends her answer with a quick look over her shoulder and a playful smile.
“Yeah fine, you never told me what that thing was anyway.” Santana says propping her head up with her hand, interested.
“It’s a dream board, just a bunch of things that I want for my future, and some positive sayings. Oh and bright happy colors.”
Santana can’t help but smile at her friend even wider, even though the blonde isn’t turned around to see her. Brittany glues another piece of a magazine clipping onto the poster board, then moves it aside and turns around to face Santana. I have a lot of left over stuff if you wanna make one too.” Brittany offers in good nature.
“No thanks Britt, most of my dreams are coming true right now, you and I are seniors, cheerios, and the most popular girls at McKinley high, in a month in a half we’ll be living the dream.”
Brittany lowers her head, actually Santana, I wanted to talk to you about that…” Brittany starts. Santana, noticing the change in Brittany’s tone becomes slightly alarmed and sits all the way up on the bed. “ I’m not going to be a cheerio this year.”
Brittany dropped the bomb. Santana’s mouth dropped open, the Latina sat there in shock for a moment before recovering. “Britt, why?” Santana was surprised that she managed to keep her tone somewhat neutral, if not a little pleading. “ You know how I spent a lot of time at the dance studio this summer? Well the guy who runs the place thinks if I practice and train and really focus that I could have a shot at getting into some really awesome performing arts schools. So I’m going to do that instead of cheerios.”
Santana was sporting a full on scowl by now. “But I’m still doing glee.” Brittany adds to soften the blow, “Please don’t be mad, S.”
At that the Latina’s face softens “I’m not mad Britt, just a little surprised and kind of sad. You’re my best friend.” Brittany reaches for one of Santana’s hands, and the darker girl gives it to her willingly.” I’m still your best friend silly. It’s just I really like dance and kind of really good at it.”
“You’re great at it B, you’re the best dancer anyone knows.”
Brittany beams and continues. “ and you’re always talking about how the two of us are going to get out of Lima as soon as we graduate, only I never knew how I was going to until now, so I figured if I worked really hard for it me and you could go anywhere after this year.”
Santana couldn’t argue with the logic the blonde had just given her, it was true Brittany was an amazing dancer, naturally, and there was no doubt in her mind that Brittany could be a professional someday soon. So the Latina smiled at her best friend and gave her hand a supportive squeeze. “Can I be there when you tell coach Sylvester?”
Brittany lit up again, and Santana, caught off guard found her self toppled over engaged in a tight hug with Brittany on top of her. When the Blonde finally pulled away blue eyes met brown, and Brittany leaned down again, her lips made contact with Santana’s cheek then she hopped off of the Latina. “Ice cream now?” The blonde said with her head quirked to the side.
“Sure, B.” Santana answered sliding off of the bed, when she stood upright she could feel the butterflies in her stomach trying to settle them selves. She and Brittany hadn’t shared a moment that intimate, with Brittany on top of her, looking into her eyes that way since they stopped hooking up sophomore year after sectionals when Brittany had accidently let it slip that they had sex on occasions, a lot of occasions. Santana had been the one to call off their little arrangement, citing that it was too risky now, and not worth it being as how neither of them were actually gay so social suicide just wasn’t worth sex between straight friends when they could just hook up with guys anyway. Brittany just nodded her head, agreeing with Santana like she always did, not adding anything except an ‘ok’, and a ‘you’re right, S’.
Three weeks later Brittany told Santana that she actually was gay, and that she herself was okay with that. Santana was slightly freaked out by the revelation, but didn’t let it show. Brittany was her best friend after all, and she loved her more than anything else in this world. So they hugged, and Santana convinced Brittany that it would be best for the blonde to just stay in the closet, and go on living her life as the perky, blonde, straight cheerio, ( not to be confused with the hormonal, slightly grumpy, knocked up blonde cheerio). Brittany did, and they kept their social status at McKinley.
Since they were 8, Brittany and Santana had this little tradition where the night before the first day of school they would spend the night over one of their respective houses, alternating every year. When they were 13 Quinn was added to the equation, and she too became apart of the tradition. This year their little slumber party was held at Santana’s house, and thanks to Quinn, their back to school sleepovers had another new addition, Rachel Berry.
Quinn had been staying with the mini-diva since baby gate,(something none of the girls talked about much since Quinn had miscarried during the beginning of her third trimester). As a consequence, Quinn and Rachel had become best friends, which meant both she and Brittany spent a lot of time with the other dark haired girl. In that time Santana found that although Rachel could be annoying a lot of the time, the girl grew on you, and Santana could honestly say that she actually liked having Rachel as a friend. The night was filled with eating junk food, watching movies, mani-pedis, and talking about boys and girls everyone thought were cute, (Brittany had decided that both Quinn and Rachel could be trusted with her secret a year before, after the four of them became really close. Santana insured that the two girls could be trusted via threats made on both of their lives, just in case). The morning came, and the Lopez house was chaotic to say the least up until Santana’s dad gathered the girls In the kitchen for breakfast. This was the first time that day that Santana got to take a look at Brittany in her first day of school outfit. Santana’s breath hitched when she took in the sight of her best friend, while Santana and Quinn had dawned their cheerio uniforms and signature ponytails, Rachel, and now Brittany both had the luxury of wearing actual clothes to school. Rachel, who’s style (with Quinn’s help) had improved drastically was wearing a simple, yet elegant black top with spaghetti straps, a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, and fashionable black boots with her hair down in soft curls, in a word, she looked good. But Brittany… Brittany looked amazing in a simple black and white form fitting plaid shirt with buttons down the front, the blonde left the first two buttons open, exposing just the right amount of cleavage. With it she was also wearing skinny jeans, but hers were black, the blonde wore a simple pair of black and white converse to finish off the look, and her hair was straight and cascading over her shoulders, her perfectly cut bangs hiding her eyes just enough, in a slightly playful manner.
“All of you girls look beautiful.” Mr. Lopez said, guiding all of them to sit down and eat. Each girl extended the man some form of thank you, and after breakfast was eaten, and pictures were taken, (also a tradition). The four girls were off to start their last year at McKinley high.
School proved to be rather uneventful, Santana and Brittany had only two classes together, not including lunch period, and no one any of the girls knew got slushied, just some freshmen periodically through out the day. Santana and Brittany had arranged for Santana to both take Brittany to her dance studio after school when they didn’t have glee, be back on time for cheerios practice, and pick Brittany up when it was over. It was weird not having Brittany with her while Sue Sylvester worked them silly, but she at least had Quinn, and after a week they had fell into the routine easily.
The second week of school was when another event was set in motion to change Santana’s life, two events actually. The first one came when Mike Chang, who the entire student body knew was hopelessly in love with Brittany finally grew the balls to ask the blonde girl out. They were at the end of second period Economics class, which Santana didn’t have with Brittany, and was given free time to study when Mike approached nervously sitting down in the empty desk beside her.
“Hey Brittany.”
“Hi Mike.” She said cheerily, putting down her pencil, giving her attention to him and not the homework she was trying to complete so she wouldn’t have to do it at home.
“I wanna ask you a question.” He starts.
“Good, because I wanna give you an answer.” The blonde says still smiling. Mike didn’t know if Brittany meant it as a joke or if she was serious, but either way it put him a little more at ease.
“Would you want to maybe go on a date with me Saturday night?”
Brittany placed a hand on Mike’s forearm. “ That’s sweet of you Mike, but I’m gonna say no, sorry.”
Mike visibly deflated, “It’s fine, can I at least no why? Do you just not like me?”
Brittany picked up her pencil again, preparing to start her homework again, “Mike you’re super sweet, and you dance good, I like that, and if I liked boys I would go out with you, I think.”
With that Brittany started her homework once again, turning her focus away from a speechless Mike Chang.
By the time lunch rolled around Santana had heard from six different people that Brittany was a lesbian. When the blonde in question, who was last of the four girls to arrive finally came to sit at their table, smiling to herself Santana wasted no time pouncing, her voice low.
“What the hell B, have you heard? Word’s out, the whole school knows you’re secret, and these two didn’t tell, trust me I interrogated.”
Rachel nodded in agreement with Santana, a slightly horrified look on her face.
“Oh I know, S.” Mike asked me out earlier, I told him I was gay.” Brittany said matter of factly, starting to eat the bowl of jell-o that was on her lunch tray. Rachel and Quinn’s jaw drops, along with Santana’s.
“You did what?” Santana says, trying to control her voice level, people were already watching them, well Brittany, the last thing she needed was for them to think her and Brittany were engaged in some sort of lover’s quarrel.
Before Brittany could respond, Mike Chang came over to them.
Santana’s eyes formed into dangerous slits, you’re dead Chang.” Mike was kin dof scared, and really didn’t want to turn away from Santana, but he did.
“Brittany I don’t know how people found out what you told me earlier, but I promise I didn’t say anything, someone must of heard us or something.”
Brittany smiled. “That’s okay Mike, I kind of didn’t want it to be a secret anymore.”
Mike smiled, relieved.
“Your life is spared, you can go now.” Santana says, and Mike complies offering Brittany a shoulder squeeze and a smile to everyone one else.”
“So you did it on purpose.” Quinn says more telling than asking.
Brittany shrugs her shoulders, “guys it’s no big deal, whatever happens happens, but staying inn the closet was making me less happy, so I’m not telling the truth now. See S, the world didn’t end.”
Santana’s shoulders slump, “ I guess you’re right, but if someone says something to you, or messes with you and I’m not around you find me as soon as possible, okay?”
“Okay Santana. Oh an here.” Brittany says offering a chocolate chip cookie to Santana. “An offering to the grumpy gods.”
Santana rolls her eyes and smiles taking the cookie, then shooting a death glare to Quinn and Rachel who were giggling at her.
The second event, (really he third if you count when Brittany denounced cheerleading) came at the end of the same week Brittany came out publically. Cheerios practice let out early, so Santana was early picking up Brittany, she went inside the dance studio and sat, watching Brittany, who was in the middle of a dance number. Santana couldn’t help but smile looking at Brittany dance, the girl looked so happy and in her element executing the complicated dance moves. She felt familiar butterflies rise up in her stomach as she watched Brittany’s midsection and hips move and her hair whip wildly around her face. She was one of 3 girls executing the dance to Beyonce’s ‘video phone’, and without bias Santana can honestly say Brittany was the best, and that made the Latina more than proud of her friend.
The song ended and the girls, Brittany included dropped to the floor and began stretching, a man in his mid 30’s told everyone in the dance room that the session was over and that they could leave.
Brittany’s eyes lit up moments later when she saw Santana, and the blonde abandoned her stretches opting instead to hug the Latina.
“S! have you been here long? Did you see me?”
“ Yeah I did, B, you look amazing out there.”
Brittany pulls away with a thanks, and a brunette approaches them. Santana notices immediately the way the girl looks at Brittany and decides she doesn’t like her. “Oh, S this is Mandy, she dances here too. Mandy this is my best friend Santana I was telling you about.” The girl smiles and waves, Santana also smiles but its because Brittany has been talking about her, not because of Mandy.
“Anyway Britt I just wanted to tell you good job today,” Mandy rests her hand on the small of Brittany’s back, and immediately Santana is jealous and shooting daggers at Mandy. “And think about what I asked you okay?”
“Okay.” Brittany smiles brightly at the brunette and hugs her, Santana notices again where this girl’s hands rests on Brittany. “Bye.” Brittany offers one last time before Mandy leaves. Brittany then goes over to retrieve her belongings. When they reach the car Santana, who had been trying to figure out how to approach questioning her friend about Mandy casually asks, “So what did she ask you?” As both girls get in the car and Santana drives off.
“ Hey S, did you know that when you dance and exercise and stuff your body releases elephants that make you happier, I think that’s why I love dancing so much.”
Santana rolls her eyes slightly, “Endorphins, B, not elephants, and you didn’t answer my question.” Santana points out after correcting her friend.
“Oh, she asked me out on a date, I told her I would have to think about it.”
Okay so I’m stopping, but you should defiantly let me know what you think, please and thank you!
