Title: Car Rides
Pairing: Santana/Brittany
Rating: G
Summary: From the prompt meme. For blueowls (I hope this is okay.) The title really says it all.
Spoilers: Brittany is Santana’s soulmate. Okay. That’s not really a spoiler.

Carlos Lopez had an ace up his sleeve. It was the only reason he ever volunteered to take care of Santana and Brittany while his wife and Brittany’s mother went to go do womanly things. After all, it was common knowledge that Santana was, and he loved his little girl to pieces, a very difficult child. And when she had Brittany by her side, she was unstoppable. Carlos had to hand it to his daughter; she definitely inherited her mother’s brains and charm. She would convince Brittany it’d be a good idea to do things like cut up the curtains to make “skirts” and “capes”, and when caught, she’d push Brittany forward and let Brittany bat her big, blue eyes and coerce any and every adult into forgiving them both immediately.

The first time Carlos was left alone with the girls, he thought he would die. Santana and Brittany had sat silently in front of the television for the first half an hour the three were alone in the house together. It was almost as if they were lulling him into a false sense of security. Half an hour later when Carlos went to go check on the girls, they were gone, the television still playing loud cartoons. He had called out for them with no response. He’d searched the house up and down looking for them with no luck until he heard a loud crash from the kitchen.

He’d run down stairs to find Santana and Brittany dumping all sorts of things all over each other. Giggling, they threw flour up over their heads and laughed at the mess they’d created. And, when they realized Carlos was there, he watched as Santana nudged Brittany and Brittany turned to him wide eyed and began to wail. And, like every adult so perfectly played, his immediate response was to comfort her instead of reprimand her. Of course, Santana, always the manipulator, saw the positive reaction and began to sob, leaving Carlos a father alone with a huge mess and two five year-old girls blubbering on the kitchen floor.

On a complete whim, he gave both the girls a towel and gathered a few stuffed animals for the girls from Santana’s collection. He picked a duck for Brittany and a tiger for Santana and ushered the girls into the small Camry that Carlos owned. The girls clutched their stuffed animal in one hand and clutched the other girl’s hand with the other. With a grin, Carlos buckled the two girls into the back seats and climbed into the driver’s seat. As soon as the car started moving, the sniffling from the back stopped. He drove circles around the neighborhood and watched the two hands in the back seat clasp tighter and tighter and then loosen as Santana slowly drifted off to sleep and her head fell to the empty space between her and Brittany. He smiled as he heard the light thump of Santana’s tiger falling to the car floor. Soon after, the thump of Brittany’s duck hitting the floor sounded as well as Brittany, too, succumbed to sleep. Chuckling to himself, Carlos drove the duo back to the Lopez residence. He scooped up the two girls and carried them into the house to let them sleep in Santana’s bed. He couldn’t help but smile as the second the two girls hit the bed, Brittany scooted her body over to snuggle with Santana. He placed the two stuffed animals back at the head of Santana’s bed and made his way downstairs to clean up the mess of flour and spice rubs on the Lopez kitchen floor.

The two mothers returned to a pristine and silent house. And, when asked if the girls had been any trouble, he had smiled, shook his head, and said, “Of course not! I have a way with kids.” Brittany’s mother had woken her up and taken her home.

Ever since that first time, every time Carlos was stranded with the girls, he gathered up Brittany’s duck and Santana’s tiger and strapped them into the Camry to take them around the neighborhood once or twice, and every time, by the time they came back to the Lopez house, the two girls were sound asleep. And, every time, Carlos would tuck them into bed and Brittany would curl up around Santana and Carlos would smile and think to himself how much the two girls looked like angels when they slept, despite the havoc they caused when awake.

So, it doesn’t really surprise him, but in fact amuses him when years later he watches Santana strap her screaming daughter into the back of Brittany’s minivan and bring out a small stuffed penguin for her daughter and a stuffed duck for Brittany. And he chuckles to himself when she returns a few minutes later, smiling at her father as she triumphantly plucks her daughter out of the car fast asleep and kisses the temple of her sleeping wife. Because, well, Santana Lopez has an ace up her sleeve, too.
