can somebody recommend a cheap student travel insurace for US citizens?

STA travel? Not sure how their American coverage is but I assume it's broadly similar...
Also if you buy an ISI card in the US, it includes travel insurance, although I'm not sure how much coverage they give, and how long you can travel for.
