Talented People...

Okay, in my humble opinion..when comparing the US and the UK, the UK has the more "talented" artists. I made a discussion on http://www.Expats.com about this and wanted to see what people here think ( Read more... )

I don't think the UK has more artistic people "per se" but has the aura of being so. The UK (and largely Europe as a whole, especially Paris and Rome) are idealised as "artistic" countries mostly because of the bohemian modernism movement of the early-to-mid 1900s. Because people in the US felt like people didn't "accept" them, they moved to the idealised European regions.

Plus, the UK has more "inspiring" landmarks and the language, particularly the dialect, lends itself to the high-end, elite "artistics" if you will. Hrm.

I've thought about this a lot too. I'm both artistically inclined (drawing) and English-y (writing), plus I idealise the UK.

I think its a ridiculous argument, if only because the term 'English' does not refer to the entire UK. And I simply won't get into forgetting musicians like BB King, Muddy Waters, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, etc. etc.

...or blatantly ripping those blues artists off, then claiming to have invented rock 'n' roll; then, a decade later, ripping punk off the Ramones, and claming originality with that. Gifted and talented con artists, maybe...

(P.S. The "con artists" remark was tongue-in-cheek. Nobody accuse me of xenophobic hate crimes against the English, please. Kthx.)

I also think it's a ridiculous argument to make. It's impossible to rank a country's artistic pools, particularly when they are completely different. British artists aren't talented because they are British. They're talented because they're talented. For every Shakespeare, there is Tenessee Williams. For every Austen, there is Kate Chopin or Edith Wharton. You can't compare any of these people or rank them against each other.

Agreed. It's over-generalisation.

I wholly agree. As an art student in Virginia, I have seen a great amount of talent alone at my school (all from professors, students, and artists around Richmond). I don't believe that any one country has more talent than all the others as far as the arts are concerned.

the English are just more talented and more natural..

Call me an ageist; but I get the feeling this post was written by a kid young enough to be my niece. I don't mean that as a snark, either- just an observation...

Agreed. What is meant by "more natural" in this context?
