I think it was about a week for me. But I don't think you need appointments anymore; they just send you a packet of forms to fill out.. I could be wrong though.

I didn't need to wait that long, I don't think...
However, at the JC they tend to be bureaucratic nazis and if you do not have at least two different forms of identification... like passport/driver's license and birth certificate, they will quite rudely tell you where you can go. Student cards are apparently not a suitable form of identification.

However, you should have gotten a letter containing your NIN when you turned 16/17 automatically. Somehow they managed to send my letter to the wrong address (I've never once moved house) and they were quite rude about that when I asked just where did they send it. If you can, ask why you never got a letter containing the NIN too.
And if you're going to the Job Centre in Southampton, keep all sharp and pointy things away from your person. They are so damn officious in there you might be tempted to kill them.

I didn't actually ever have to go to an interview when I got mine. I'm pretty sure I just had a short chat on the phone with some pencil pusher and they sent me the number about a month later.
