I'm in the UK on a student visa which has restricted me to 20 hours of work a week 'during term time.' However, I have been able to work 40 hours per week during vacation/holiday, i.e. winter/christmas break and spring/easter break ( Read more... )

Masters Students can work full-time during Christmas and Easter but are normally expected to work on their dissertation during part of the Summer. A short holiday during the Summer is acceptable with academic approval.

Check your own university's rules too, but this is the case at my own university and at the one I work at, as well. So you would probably have to go to Student Services or the equivalent and ask them to formally recognise that you are taking a 2 week break (or whatever).

Thanks! I've emailed the Internaitonal Students Centre at my uni and had a word with the administrator at my department. She said a stern 'no' as postgrads are not like undergraduates and are not entitled to a summer holiday. Additionally, she thought I might try and get an extension when my work is due (which I wouldn't).

But, upon further explanation (and some tears) she said they would consider it.

Its really silly because I think they should consider total hours not hours per week. As I do not have any other work lined up for the whole of the summer, 40 hours/wk for TWO Weeks should be fine. Surely it would be better than 20 hours/wk for many more weeks.

Ehh...

Thanks for your help!
