Revisiting amusing and just plain wrong laws.....driving this time

Going along with the previous post, and driving stateside...The whole list, courtesy of dmv.org (who knew the dmv had a sense of humor):

Alabama
  • It is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle.
  • It is legal to drive the wrong way down a one-way street as long as a lantern is attached to the front of your car.

humour, driving (us)

Well, dmv.org is not the actual dmv governmental website, but that of another (possibly more helpful) group. The dmv websites are buried in whatever sites the states so choose to place them.

However, I did discover that the same person is in charge of Tennessee drivers licenses and handgun licenses. Sweet.

California - No unoccupied vehicle may exceed 60 miles per hour.

I wonder if the guys from Mythbusters know that... haha.

In Minnetonka, Minnesota, if you drive a truck that leaves mud, dirt or sticky substances on any road, you will be considered a public nuisance who is harming the peace, safety, and general welfare of the town.

This is because Minnetonka is the home to many rich people driving fancy cars who would be unhappy if they got mud, dirt, or sticky substances on them.

London

It is illegal to have sex on a motorbike.

However, there is no law that states that a taxi should carry a bale of hay for the horse (contrary to popular belief)

It might have been at one time. A lot of the time we hear about these laws because the civil service is going through the law books looking for clearly outdated laws to repeal.

An enduring misconception about hackney carriages is that the driver must keep a bale of hay in the boot to feed the (nowadays) non-existent horse. This misconception probably comes about because of section 51 of the London Hackney Carriage Act 1831 which made it an offence, punishable by a 20 shilling fine, for the owner or driver of a hackney carriage (or any one else) to:

"feed the horses of or belonging to any hackney carriage in any street, road or common passage, save only with corn out of a bag, or with hay which he shall hold or deliver with his hands".

I'm sure it was a deliberate misreading by some news site (on a slow news day) that brought this to the worlds attention, just like so many other urban myths.

Yeah, it totally sucks here in Oregon 'cause you have to have an employee of the gas place to pump your gas. I used to live in Utah and it was weird when we first moved here, because we pumped our own gas in Utah. I have no idea why they have that law here.

IIRC that applies in New Jersey as well. I initially thought it might be some strange union demand, but then I wondered whether petrol-station employees would be unionised anyway.
