Important Historical Dates

Mar 22, 2007 17:03

A friend recently took the piss because I had no clue as to what the bloody hell "Custer's Last Stand" was. We have since decided to inform each other as to the ten most important historical dates/events in US and U.K. history. Thus far I've provided him with him, his list is here, although I'm currently requesting that it be made a public entry ( Read more... )

My cousin went to school there for one year before transferring to UCF, I wonder why she neglected to mention it.

I'm British, and have roughly 4 of those dates you chose.

I stopped at 10, because I could have added another 10 after them. Would you have any more of those if you chop off everything that came later, or different ones?

Feel free to keep going, I'm trying for events that aren't widely known by Americans.

My first thought was "Is the Battle of Trafalgar important enough for the top ten?" What's funny is I'm an American in America and it didn't even cross my mind to try to think of an American History date. Can you say 'anglophile', kids? :)

His list is very good, though I'm not sure we have enough perspective to include 9/11 yet. (I don't doubt that it will qualify, but its impact is still rippling.)

I would find it so difficult to narrow it down to ten counting just dates. I could probably do 10 major events, 10 major documents, 10 major movements, etc.

As an American--even one who studied history--I'm fairly typical in knowing the major highlights of British history, your Norman invasions and your Magna Cartas and your Reformations and your Restorations.

That's been done, over and over, we're looking for off the beaten path dates that one wouldn't automatically think of.
