Don't Tempt Fate: A Cautionary Tale

Jan 19, 2008 10:07

A few weeks back, I responded to an email on MySpace from my friend Vernon, who is in The Julia Dream, an Atlanta band. I had just discovered (erroneously, as it turns out) that I had a schedule conflict and might not be able to attend the show here in Savannah tonight. They are playing at The Guitar Bar, by the way.

I joked about pretending to be ( Read more... )

Feel better soon, baby.

I'm increasingly convinced that every word one speaks becomes an intention to the universe, which is why you have to be very careful what you say because it may well come back to you.

Check out The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn. It's public domain now, so you can read it online here or as a text file here. (It's not a long book, even printed, so it won't take long to load.)

It was written in the 1920s, but it dovetails into a lot of current notions that are circulating, from "What the Bleep..." onwards.

Seriously true. It is aggravating when the universe demonstrates that it has no sense of humour, though, and takes even the most outrageous notion as a suggestion or request ( ... )

How on earth do professional fiction writers cope? Much of what they dwell on is related to introducing interesting conflict to a story, and supposedly we all put large chunks of ourselves into what we write, even when it's not autobiography. It's still freakin' cold here in Atlanta - space heaters and new socks sound good. Feel better - your bug must surely be on the edge of defeat by now!

I no can haz duvet, but I got the rest taken care of. Also finally realized I have "txt msging" on my phone. Der! Though I refuse to type in "txt msg" shorthand, so it takes a while. Am I the only person who punctuates and capitalizes in text messages? LOL

Got in touch with my friend and he does not hate me for being ill, which is a relief. :)

No. I do it, too. So did Mr. TBH, though he sometimes lapsed into abbreviations.

Maybe it is our inner Luddite rebelling against the computer- and technology-assisted "BBS-ification" of the English language. :)

Now I hate the urge to play my ancient Beach Boys LPs, but have no stereo...Limewire to the rescue! LOL

I feel better, but am thrilled to have Monday off.
